Rising Stars: Meet Liz Silva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Silva.

Hi Liz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My family has a history of photography. My great grandfather was a career photographer and provided for his family. My grandfather also dabbled in photography and I have memories of developing film with him in his upstairs bathroom. I went to college for digital media with a focus on e-commerce but took many photography classes in that degree plan. I have always had an interest in photography and capturing moments in time but it never became a passion until I had children. I remember holding my newborn son in 2016 and thinking how his little wrinkled hands and toes will never look like this again and I never wanted to forget them. For the longest time, I would photograph family and friends for free because I just loved it so much. I eventually realized that I should go all in and make a business out of it. I love photographing children, babies, families, pregnancies, couples but I also love interior design. I have worked in the home decor industry since I was in my teens so photographing home decor and interior details is familiar and fun.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have been pretty self-sufficient since I was 16. I wanted to attend a private outdoor learning school and had to work at Whataburger and the school office to pay the tuition for. I graduated HS a year early to save money because tuition was expensive. I purchased my first car on my own. Have been paying rent and living on my own since I was 18. Paid for all my higher education by working 40+ hours per week while attending college full time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most proud of how young I was when I started “adulting” and how much I’ve grown and learned as a result of being pushed into adulthood at a younger age than most. I never missed out on fun with my friends, I just had a job to take seriously because I had rent and bills to pay. I feel like coming from that I’ve learned how to appreciate the little things in life, which makes me so passionate about capturing even the tiniest details during family, newborn etc photoshoots. Being a parent myself, I feel like I really know how to capture children’s true personality too. I know how to get them out of their shell for something better than your typical “say cheese” smile. I try to capture the smiles that make you smile.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I am a wife and mother of two boys ages 3 and 5 and they are by far my best clients. I also enjoy gardening and we have a large vegetable and pollinator friendly garden in our backyard. Absolutely love taking opportunities to use my photography passion to capture all the butterflies, flowers and insects.
