Rising Stars: Meet Natalie Salinas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Salinas.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started to seriously focus on makeup after high school. I decided to start my makeup Instagram page in 2016 to practice my makeup skills in hopes of finding clients and working with makeup brands. Fast forward, I now receive gifted makeup from big makeup brands such as Urban Decay, Kiss, Ace Beaute, etc. As well as being monetized on Instagram from posting reels to paid collabs with brands. And I am now able to do makeup on others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was just starting out, and I didn’t know much about this social media beauty community or how to be a makeup artist. Opportunities started to appear years later. So, I guess just being consistent all these years without seeing any progress or help is mentally draining, thinking you’re not going to make a living doing what you love.

But I didn’t let the obstacles or challenges stop me completely because I was mainly focusing on having fun creating rather than anything else.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do all types of makeup looks! To natural, glam, creative paints, and I’m going to incorporate SFX.

I’m known for my creative makeup designs. I’ve done SpongeBob, Snoopy, Hello Kitty, Grinch, Mexican art & culture, Christmas looks, and more!

What I’m most proud of is being able to show my work and inspire people to do the same.

I think what sets me apart from others is not doing what everyone does. Hence my username @natyourusual (not your usual) Haha I wanted to draw cartoon characters on my face for fun. I just love art so I decided to incorporate it into makeup. But I also love to do hair & create fashion designs etc! I love to do anything beauty related! To make up appointments and catwalks. And in hopes of doing other projects!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The advice I give is to start NOW! Don’t wait to have the best makeup products, lighting, support, clients, and networks. Just work with what you have and build your portfolio with makeup looks of yourself if you don’t have clients yet. Don’t be scared to ask people on social media if you don’t know a lot of people around you. Offer them gas money, pay them for being your model, look for places to volunteer that might need makeup artists. But MOST importantly, don’t give up!

And what I wish I knew starting out is that it is okay to start working with clients with minimal makeup skills. You don’t have to wait until you have a lot of experience to have clients as a makeup artist. And that it is okay to mess up! If someone doesn’t like your work, you can remove it and start again. Which is a great thing about being a makeup artist and not a tattoo artist haha. Eventually, you will have more confidence in your work, and you won’t feel much pressure when doing makeup on clients.
