Today we’d like to introduce you to Sugar Joiko.
Hi Sugar, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m just Houst-Orleanian pop artist located in the heart of Clutch City. I got started in music first as a producer. As a little girl I would remix and recreate my favorite video game soundtrack songs. Still today I would say a dream of mine is to produce video game music.
Sugar Joiko to me is world pop with a fusion of soul and synth. I live unapologetically through my music and I hope that my sound inspires others to do the same.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been struggles. I think one of the biggest stress relievers for me post-pandemic is finally deciding that there’s more than one way to be BLACK. I feel that I’ve often been lumped into boxed and stereotyped categories of genres simply because I’m an African American woman. Being my own producer and creator of my work, I’ve often not been taken seriously by our male counterparts as well. It’s been a long road individually, politically, and mentally. But I’m glad these conversations happen and I’m happy we are entering an era where monolith biases are starting to disappear.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a pop singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. I produce music for myself, other artists, and even some businesses that need edgy theme songs for their branding.
I’m very proud of my independency. I work very hard and truly believe what I put in, I receive back. I’ve performed in three continents, I’ve performed on national television in Japan, and I’ve also received social media praise from top-charting artists like LIZZO, Chris Brown, Timbaland, Missy Elliott and more.
I hope what sets me apart from others is that I lead with passion and I lead with fun. I enjoy making “feel good” music. “What comes from the heart, reaches the heart”
How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure I believe in luck. I believe good luck finds those that are prepared. If you work hard, the right opportunities come at the right time because you are prepared for them in that moment.
