For Danielle Coulanges, every platform is an opportunity to meet people where they are. By expanding D’Auntie Speaks from podcasting into a written column, she is creating new ways to share lessons on faith, resilience, relationships, and personal growth. Drawing from her own experiences and challenges, Danielle’s work encourages readers to find hope in difficult seasons, embrace life’s lessons with grace, and recognize that they are never alone in the struggles they face.
Danielle, what inspired you to expand D’Auntie Speaks from a podcast into a written column format?
When it comes to creative pursuits, writing has always been my first love. Long before launching the D’Auntie Speaks podcast, I poured my thoughts into a blog and eventually published two books. No matter the platform — social media, print, or speaking engagements — my goal has always been the same: to meet people where they are.
So, when the opportunity came to write a monthly column, I embraced it wholeheartedly. There’s something deeply personal about the written word. Without the distraction of visuals or outside interpretations, readers are able to slow down, connect with the message, and reflect on it in their own way. Some thoughts simply land differently on paper, and writing gives those ideas the space to breathe, resonate, and inspire.
Writing for faith-based magazines while reaching a broader audience can be a balance. How do you make your message both meaningful and relatable?
What I’ve found to be true is that at our core, people are more alike than we are different. We all want many of the same things — to feel safe, loved, valued, successful, and connected to something meaningful. The details may differ, but the human longing behind them is universal.
I try to write from a place of honesty and real-life experience. The struggles I face are rarely mine alone. Chances are, someone else is carrying the same worries, disappointments, insecurities, or questions. The real difference is often in how we choose to respond and move forward.
I don’t have all the answers, and I’m certainly not perfect. I have a past and I make mistakes. Consequently, I cannot be judgmental or preachy. I’ve learned valuable lessons through my experiences that I choose to share openly with others. My hope is that readers can see pieces of themselves in my journey, and they walk away feeling understood, uplifted, and reminded that they are not alone in whatever they may be facing.
Your work centers on sharing wisdom and life lessons. What themes or conversations have you found resonate most with readers?
Life and its complexities are an ever-present challenge. Everyone thinks their situation is unique and hopeless, until they hear from someone else who had a similar experience and survived it. The themes I find resonate the most are those related to struggles in relationships and finding inner balance. Everyone wants a formula to maintaining good rapport with loved ones and colleagues. We all seek to achieve a level of happiness and bring out the same in others, including family and romantic partners. We strive to charter a successful career and ensure a comfortable future. We deal with unexpected challenges of all sorts. How do you manage a crisis or every day hiccups and ups and downs without falling apart?
Wisdom is born from surviving life’s challenges without allowing bitterness to take root. The lessons learned ultimately make you stronger and wiser. People are drawn to practical insight that helps them navigate life more effectively and with greater peace. They want reassurance that no matter how difficult things may seem, there is still hope for their situation.
How does your writing process differ from how you communicate on your YouTube podcast?
The initial step for creating a podcast or a written article is the same. First identify what I want to share and the message I want to convey. Then the approach diverges from there. For a podcast, the tone is more conversational, because I’m speaking directly to the viewer. I also structure the dialogue around inserted visuals or sounds that support the topic.
For a written piece, the theme is developed using imagery and language that will help the reader visualize the concept. Thought-provoking questions or commentaries are thrown in to engage the reader’s emotions. The tone is more reflective and analytical.
As you continue growing this platform, what impact do you hope D’Auntie Speaks will have on your audience?
I’m thrilled to watch this new platform evolve and can’t wait for audiences to experience the diversity woven throughout my work. As a teacher, I learned the importance of reaching people in different ways — engaging visual learners, auditory learners, and passionate readers alike. That same philosophy now fuels the development of my magazine columns, creating a fresh and dynamic space to share messages of hope, faith, resilience, and joy. My goal is to inspire an even wider audience as we journey together toward living fuller, happier, and more meaningful lives.
