Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Owings.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Ever since I was a little girl, I can remember wanting to be an interior designer. When I was growing up, that was my mother’s profession, and sometimes I would accompany her to appointments. While she was talking with her clients I would find myself flipping through the wallpaper books, choosing paint colors, and dreaming up spaces. Even as a teenager, I would move the furniture around when no one was home to see how much different a room could feel with the same pieces. Graduating from design school was one of the happiest days of my life- the day my dream could become a reality.
Now, as an adult, after 10 years of practicing design, both hotels and residences, I still find inspiration in my experiences. It could be seeing a fabric pattern that can inspire a whole design or the color of an ocean wave as it crashes. My passions are not only to create beautiful and functional spaces but to also inspire my clients to think about how they live in their home and make it a sanctuary for them where they can actually live–kids, pets and all. Where home is personalized and means something. Home and the belongings brought into them should be beautiful and evoke emotions. In those emotions, one should find comfort and happiness. I am here to assist people in achieving that happiness through interior design.
Please tell us about your art.
I am an interior designer and creative. I love to assist others in creating the space of their dreams. Sometimes, that means I sew draperies and pillows, or even bedskirts for clients. Other times that means creating artwork for their gallery wall from a found object if I cannot find what I need from what is available in the market. I love to curate pieces to fit my client’s personality and style.
I have designed a luxury line of a wool-blend throws-The aaronEVETTE collection with a manufacturer, as well. You can find these throws in boutiques in Houston, Brenham, and Austin, TX, as well as Pittsburgh, PA. I will be further expanding the home line to encompass other products in the future.
The message in all of my creative endeavors is to find happiness and comfort in the spaces and belongings you surround yourself with. Our lives are so fast-paced, you need to have a space to come home to surrounded by things that you love. A place where you can relax, snuggle up, and be yourself.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success as a whole is about not giving up and working through the day-to-day while maintaining drive and determination to show the world what you have to offer. It is finding the people who will appreciate you and your passion. What fuels me to keep going is knowing that my creativity will impact someone’s life in a positive way.
