Meet Nic Melendez of Melendez in Southeast Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nic Melendez.

Nic, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started DJing when I was 16 years old from my dad. He taught me everything I needed to know and I basically used my own flavor to my mixing. I’ve been DJing in various clubs in the southeast from Club Fuego on Fuqua, to club vamp on a telephone, all the way to jet lounge downtown. But mostly, it’s the SE culture parties that grew my following. I’m the only DJ in the area doing every party so people tended to recognize me. Then, I got contacted by intelligent grind (a music event company) to DJ their Houston shows. After that, I DJ’d at White Oak Music Hall, Warehouse Live, & Revention Music Center. But I wanted to do something more… years, I was always under someone’s wing and never really took the initiative to make something of my own. As years went by, I plotted and plotted till the year 2018… everything came as I expected it should.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nah, it’s been a tough one. I’ve made many sacrifices for this career. At first, it was hard because I was DJing EDM and nobody was really feeling me… I feel like I stood out until I started DJing rap mostly then I got in the rhythm with everything. Me and my mom would go at it with this as well, she wanted me to go to college, but that was never for me. I see her point of view as a parent wanting the best for your child, but she never saw mine which at the time I was starting to get really noticed. Plus, I threw a couple of events prior and nothing ever happened… I rushed a lot and didn’t put my mind into perspective.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
The group is called B.L.A.D.E (Bringing Live And Direct Events), I came up with the name and put everyone together but I don’t claim it as mine. The other members are my brother Mark, cameraman Manny, cameraman/curator Zac, my dawg Mattcity, and my other Lil slime Thai. Every time BLADE is mentioned we say “Us” cause we’re doing this together. We are known for individually changing the game of how the event scene in Houston is. Our Days Before Astroworld Event is the top event so far of 2019, the footage speaks for itself. We’re different because we got the resources to take us higher than everyone else.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like that the city has started to become known for its hidden talent. Houston has really started charting on the map recently and it’s only gonna grow as the talent starts to get known. I hate that no one supports until you are known. Dawg, if I had the push that I have now back in high school, I wouldn’t be here Rn. I know that would’ve elevated me but no one believed in me. Vice versa for artists in the city.
