Today we’d like to introduce you to Leneice Parker.
Leneice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I worked full-time for the City of Houston throughout most of my college career and throughout law school. I’d always knew that I wanted to be a l awyer, so immediately after obtaining my Bachelor’s degree, I began to self-study for the LSAT. After receiving my scores, I applied for one law school, South Texas College of Law. I knew that not working full-time would not be an option for me, so I applied for the part-time law school program and was accepted.
I completed the part-time program at South Texas after 3 1/2 years and graduated in December of 2014. I immediately began to prepare and sat for the February 2015 Texas Bar exam. In April 2015, I received my results stating that I had passed the exam, and I immediately began a part-time law practice tailored to family and personal injury law. In the fall of 2015, I began working on my “transition strategy” to enable me to leave my career with the City of Houston and open a full-time solo law practice. In January 2016, I turned in my resignation letter and I’ve gone full speed ahead in my law practice since then.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were some struggles but I won’t complain, lol. Working a full-time job and going to school can be very demanding and time-consuming. Then, once I completed that, and became an entrepreneur, better yet began running a law practice, even more dedication and focus was required. It can really put a strain on your “social life” and “personal life” when you’re focused on hitting your goals which is a problem for a lot of people. I honestly don’t mind though. I have a wonderful support system that is very understanding, encouraging and empowering, so that coupled with strong faith keeps me grounded. One thing everyone should remember when facing difficult tasks and/or seasons is that you aren’t the first and you certainly won’t be the last person to do it, so just get it done.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Law Office of Leneice D. Parker story. Tell us more about the business.
My law practice is tailored primarily to family law and personal injury. In the area of family law, we handle all domestic litigation from filing suit through final trial. Some common types of suits handled by my office are divorces, child support cases, child custody cases, adoptions, parental terminations, post-judgment enforcement actions, and defending against applications for protective orders.
As far as personal injury cases, we handle the cases from the time of the incident, starting with communicating with responsible parties and insurance companies and continuing through litigation if necessary.
I also have a probate facet of my practice which deals with the drafting of wills and estate planning documents and probating of estates.
Of all the (many) things that I am most proud of about my company, the ability to place children with the proper parent certainly ranks at the top of the list. I get retained on many child custody cases and nothing brings my heart more joy than advocating for a parent who loves their child(ren) and having the Court decide in our favor that my client is the parent who will be designated as the custodial parent. Those days keep me on cloud 9.
Something that I believe sets me apart is my compassion yet composure. I empathize with my clients and advocate for them as if it were me fighting a legal battle. But I do not allow myself to lose my composure and become so engulfed in the pettiness and drama that I lose a level head. My ability to remain poised (in my professional life) is something that I most certainly pride myself on and one of the things that my clients often highlight.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Prayer and faith have played a big role. I don’t really want to call it luck because I think it’s an insult to the Creator, lol. One thing that my pastor recently delivered a sermon on was counting it all joy. You have to do that in business and in life, in general. You thank Him for the good and the bad days and know that the bad days are just days preparing you for greater.
