Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Maddux.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Scott. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a small town boy who grew up in Texas always wanting to play in the NFL. I was college educated in beautiful northern Louisiana, in both football and architecture, so when the NFL didn’t come calling, I went to work as an architect. I spent time with some of the best firms in the country being taught by the best architects about the business, craft and most importantly, the art of architecture. As my career grew, so did my family, we have six kids, and we settled in Fort Bend County in 2012.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting your own business is never a smooth road I suppose? We’ve been bootstrapped from the beginning but the struggles have been more personal. In my 30s, I started getting sick and was diagnosed, or rather misdiagnosed with several very rare diseases. I spent the next eight years going from one specialist to the next, one rare, terrible diagnosis to the next, all the while living daily with wrenching pain and failing health. One dark August night, I found myself in the hospital and my wife was worried how she would raise our family without me. By God’s grace, the right surgeon joined my team of physicians and found that I had a birth defect. Once removed, I was on the track to get my life back. My wife got her husband back and my kids got their dad back. I wish I could tell you that redemption to normal life was immediate, but it’s been a journey. I’m a thousand times better than the eight years leading up to my surgery and I’m thankful every day for small victories and huge blessings.
Please tell us about studio M6.
My business is Architecture. I am a generalist architect that does a little bit of anything and everything but what I really specialize in, what I’m known for is small, simple, affordable high design architecture. I am a rare breed of an architect that also builds my work. People know it as design/build. I lean toward modern architecture but I give my clients designs that reflect them and their desires. We are unique because we are small and nimble and can move quickly. Juxtaposed to our small size, our knowledge in the craft is deep and we are literally experts in our field. As builders, we are extremely detailed and since I designed the building I know exactly how it should be built. I am most proud of surviving! We are bootstrapped and debt free! We’ve grown each year and in 2018, we were awarded the highest honor for an Architect in the Best of Missouri City Awards.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There is nothing about my story that I would change… well, maybe, I would have gone on my own earlier in my career, maybe I wouldn’t have been sick. But my story is my story and it has made me who I am, scars and all.
