Meet Trailblazer Rebekah Gullo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Gullo.

Rebekah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I actually started my blog about seven years ago, when Instagram had first started! I didn’t keep up with it, unfortunately, but then decided to start again about two years ago. My love of fashion just kept me coming back to it, and I love helping friends and family with fashion questions, so I knew I needed to turn it into a business! Now, with two children, my love of fashion has just blended into my family life, and I love dressing them too! I started pitching myself to brands about six months into blogging and turned it into a business about a year after starting. It allows me to stay home with my babes, but also working from home can be very challenging!

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never smooth! I was very lucky to be able to do it as something for fun. I did want to turn it into a business, but I didn’t have to rely on the income. It would be very stressful to rely on it as income because it is very up and down! You have to put yourself out there and sell your Instagram and blog. You have to make good content, period. I studied photography, purchased a camera, and spent many hours researching how to pitch, how to write e-mails and so much more! There are so many bloggers now, you have to stand out from them. It’s also really good to find a niche, not just fashion. I do fashion and family, and most of my paid work is family orientated. Some girls can do healthy eating, working out, cooking. Fashion is just so generalized, and you can get swallowed up in it. Pick something to make yourself stand out from everyone else.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am fashion based, obviously, but focus on being a mom of a boy and a girl. My tag line is “everyday mom helping the everyday girl wear everyday looks.” I like to show that you can still get up, and get dressed even when you have babies! Most of what I post is mom-friendly and wearable and affordable! I refuse to be that person that wears no makeup and sweats just because I have children. I hope I can be a motivation for moms to do what makes them feel best, and sometimes, it’s just taking the time to put on mascara! Also, no mom wants to be in a short dress with babies or toddlers, so I like to show stretchy jeans that you can wear and get on the floor with the kids and shirts that aren’t going to show your bra when you bend over. Practical, but cute items! My turning point in blogging is when I worked with Uppababy when I had my little girl seven months ago. It was huge for me! I’ve been very fortunate to work with two of my favorite brand’s LOFT and Madewell as well. My favorite part of this job is when I inspire someone to try something new, even as small as wearing a hat. I gave them the confidence to wear it and rock it! Also, when I find affordable pieces, people can’t believe it, and I’ve turned them on to affordable shopping!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
There are so many opportunities for women to support each other, and the blogger community in Houston is amazing for that. All the big Houston bloggers welcomed me and helped me right away. Social media has helped me as a woman too because when we are honest about certain issues, such as motherhood, that is so helpful to other women that are having the same problems but haven’t talked about it.
