Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Turner.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2007, during the recession, I read a newspaper article that listed the top recession proof businesses. The article listed pets, alcohol, tobacco and chocolate as the top recession proof businesses. I then purchased an Astro Van for $600 and started delivering pet food to those who lacked transportation and or time in my home town St. Louis, MO. For the next five years, I added more pet services to the brand. In 2013 I opened my first store front in St. Louis, which includes, pet grooming, dog day care and retail. In 2014 I moved to Houston and started dog walking and pet sitting services inside 610 loop. I also self-published two books while living in Houston. Today, I operate my store front in St. Louis and services in Houston.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I was very young and uneducated when I started this business. I struggled a lot due to my lack of experience. My struggles were choosing the proper personnel for the team. In the beginning, I hired people using my heart instead of my head. After being burned by so many employees, I learned to choose my teammates wisely.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kennedys Pet Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
Kennedy’s Pet Shop provides outstanding services and products! We are known for our affordable services. I am proud to offer affordable services in urban settings. Our goal is to keep your pet happy and healthy, so that pet owners’ minds are free and they can be happy and healthy. What sets us apart from other pet businesses is that we try to be more personal. We look at our clients as family members.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The pet industry is getting bigger and bigger every year. A decade ago, a lot of pets lived in the backyard and now they live inside of the home, wear clothing, get groomed more and are treated more like pets rather than animals. This trend will continue to grow and we will be sure to keep it affordable for those in urban areas. Our goal is to open many more personal store fronts in urban areas across the nation. The internet has changed the world and the big chain retailers that were once the go to for pet needs are now closing because big spaces are not needed anymore. The new business is direct to consumers so many new businesses are starting a website and cutting the middleman/retailer out and slashing prices on quality products.
