Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Brooks.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was first brought to Houston from the small town of Wichita Falls, Texas on a track and field scholarship to run for Texas Southern University. While attending school, I was also apart of the athletic training team and worked with many of the sports teams. I was able to obtain my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology, as well as become the first student-athlete/athletic trainer to ever graduate from the program. It was not recommended that student-athletes pursue an athletic training career while competing because of the level of difficulty that would come with that task. So, I have been very thankful and blessed to be able to beat those odds. After completing my track and field eligibility at TSU, I went on to graduate with my Masters of Science in Kinesiology.
Soon after graduation, I welcomed my proudest accomplishment, my beautiful daughter who’s name is Nyomi. Before giving birth to my baby girl, I had to think of something that I could be able to do to support us! I was stuck! After receiving my degrees, I didn’t realize how hard it would be to find a job in my field that would actually support the lifestyle that I wanted for my daughter and I. I enjoyed athletic training, but I knew it required a lot of my time. And I just knew most of my time would be spent with my daughter, after all, she was my first child! I began looking into health and wellness and that’s how I came across massage therapy! Within two days after researching the field, I enrolled in a program at Cortiva Institute and started my massage program one week after the graduation of my Masters. degree. I wasn’t for certain where it would take me but I was determined to not fail! I was eight months pregnant when I started massage school and was really unsure if I could finish the program. It was very tough.
After giving birth to my daughter, I took off for the six weeks. And on the last day, I could be out of school, my adviser called and informed me that I had to be back to the school the following Monday or I would be dropped from the program. All weekend, I was stressing and worried about what I should do. I just had my baby and now I was being asked to leave her, to finish a program that I wasn’t even sure about doing when I started it. I prayed long and hard all weekend and when Monday came around, I was at the school bright and early. Every day, I stayed after school and even went to the night classes to make up all of the missed classes that I was absent for. I was exhausted, and sad since I was missing my baby girl. But I finished the program!
It was two weeks after, I was scheduled to graduate with the class, but I finished and I was proud. Shortly after, I took my state exam and passed. I was certified! Fast forward to now, I have started my own mobile recovery massage service by the name of Impact Muscle Therapy. It has been a year since the start of my massage career, and I am loving it! I am growing my clientele, and have been able to work with top tier athletes of Houston! I have clients who are so wonderful and who allow me to learn and grow so that I am able to provide them with the absolute best service! I have received many other certifications since, such as oncology massage, prenatal, as well as decompression therapy (cupping). Although it has only been a year, I have so much more in store and I am looking forward to expanding my business and being of service to people all over the Houston area! Being able to provide relief to others, and give them a sense of hope, and strength in regards to their health and wellness is an amazing feeling and I am looking forward to providing the same for many others!g
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all. The hardest part has been trying to figure out just exactly how much of my time away from daughter that I’m willing to sacrifice, although everything I am trying to accomplish is for the both of us, I do know that she deserves my attention and love as well. Being a single parent is difficult, I am grateful t have the support of family, without them, I wouldn’t be here today. Another obstacle that I face is listening to my body and having to explain to clients that sometimes I do need breaks. I am still learning t use correct body mechanics in order to have longevity in the field. Sometimes, we get excited and want to push ourselves, but we have to remind our self to be patient so that we can actually last in our field.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Impact Muscle Therapy story. Tell us more about it.
My company is Impact Muscle Therapy, a mobile massage and recovery specialist. I specialize in sports massage, injury prevention, and recovery but I am also an oncologist and prenatal specialist. Clients are able to book appointments through my website, and I arrive at their homes or designated location with everything I need for the service. I also provide upgrades such as hot stones, aromatherapy, scrubs, and hot towel treatments. What sets me apart is my willingness to actually study and research the symptoms that the clients may experience so that I know exactly how to help them. I want to make a difference.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I typically am not the person to rely on luck. I think hard work and determination will take you further than luck ever can and ever will. Nothing happens on accident, everything happens for a reason. You have to put yourself in the position to win. You have to be around the right group of people at the right times, don’t be afraid to talk to people and pick their brain. You have to be willing to be uncomfortable sometimes. Everything is a learning experience!
