Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura King, CPP.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked as a hospital newborn photographer when I first started out, and in two years I photographed over 1000 babies. These were mini sessions right in the hospital rooms, with a standard set of poses and very basic lighting. As I began to learn more about photography, I realized that there was so much more to know and if I was going to have the freedom to grow my skills and creativity I needed to go out on my own. I started a business in my hometown of Columbia, Missouri in 2014, and then in mid-2015 my husband’s job dictated a move to Houston.
We love Houston, and plan to stick around for a long time. We’ve converted the entire second floor of our League City home into a beautiful photography studio. Since moving to Houston I’ve also thrown myself into learning more about my craft and honing my skills. I’ve traveled to many workshops and conferences and have studied with some of the best newborn photographers around the country. In 2016, I went through a rigorous course of testing and image critique to earn my CPP (certified professional photographer) designation from PPA (Professional Photographers of America). I’m proud to be one of just a handful of CPPs in the greater Houston area who specialize in newborn photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Moving my business from my smallish Missouri town to Houston has definitely been a challenge. Marketing is a lot tougher in a brand-new city without all those hometown connections.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in photographing pregnancy, newborn and baby’s first year. Many of my families stay with me for my baby plan and come back for family photos. The baby plan captures some of those precious milestones of the first year and ends with a birthday cake smash. It brings me so much joy to watch the babies grow. What will they look like next time they come to my door? This is the season in life that moves the fastest, with the most changes in such a short time – from a belly bump to a toddler in just one year! Blink and you’ll miss it. That’s why I love my job so much. I know I can’t stop time… but just for an instant I can freeze it.
I’m known for classic, elegant portraits of motherhood, babies and families that capture the emotion of this beautiful fleeting time. I specialize in creating custom wall art and heirloom albums that will last for generations. It’s important to me that my clients have a fun and relaxing experience. I take care of all the details, down to advising on clothing choices if help is needed, custom designing albums and wall galleries, ordering products and quality checking everything. I’ll even do home delivery. Especially when you have a new baby, that extra service is a nice thing to have!
I’m proud that my hard work has begun to be recognized. In addition to being a Certified Professional Photographer, I was named one of the best newborn photographers in Houston in 2017 by Expertise. One of my images was awarded Best Portrait of a Child by the Professional Photographers Guild of Houston in 2016. I’ve also had images published in the national photography magazine “Shutter”.
What were you like growing up?
I was an only child, and my favorite things to do were reading and making crafts. I was a little shy but I always had a few close friends. I loved going on trips, and had the opportunity to travel to Brazil, Israel, Canada and Mexico. A bit hard to handle as a teenager. Since having had daughters of my own, I have apologized to my mother!
