Today we’d like to introduce you to Madd Kyng.

Michael Kendrix Temple aka “Madd Kyng” your new favorite artist is a hot emerging creator based currently in Houston, Texas. Madd Kyng has been painting since 2012 and received his degree in 2015 from San Diego State University. Madd Kyng works with a variety of mediums on an array of different canvases from, animal skins, fabrics, reversible canvas, bodies, you name it. His inspiration comes from pop culture and the classics of Art History and of the world of culture. He puts all his thoughts cohesively into the canvas to make the perfect piece, showing the technical skills of the old masters, yet with an imagination of a child to create an eye-catching composition. Recently Michael has been shown at Art Basel 2 years in a row, and with his mind-blowing interactive art, he has also been featured on The Shade Room where he received almost 2 million views. He has also worked with TV Johnny Dang, been featured on the news and published in London’s Demur Fashion Magazine.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My style of work is basically Pop Mythology, consisting of classical or modern figures of history, infused with an Afrocentric twist while also including a lot of pop culture as well. I put all my thoughts and knowledge cohesively into my work, showing the technical skills of the old masters while showing a wild imagination using a spectrum of mediums. I work on different canvas such as reversible canvas that you can touch and change the art by swiping up or down.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
The conditions for an artist today are good due to social media an opportunity to market to a large audience, but at the same time, it is over saturated with artist meaning more completion. As an artist grows in this day and age, they are able to brand themselves and produce merchandise other than there paintings, meaning an extra revenue from your arts. Cities like Houston could host week-long art fairs at the George R Brown center.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I am constantly doing shows all over the country and the UK. For the most part of viewing my art, I show every year at Art Basel in Miami for a week. I also show art in New York at the Brooklyn Beer Garden. To keep up with the show and new pieces follow me on the gram @maddkyng.
