Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Jones.
Chris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My educational journey began as a tutor while obtaining my undergraduate degree at Texas State University. As a tutor, I worked with college students in all aspects of Math during my junior year. Later, I transitioned to Mendez Elementary where I helped underprivileged students who had learning disabilities (autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders). During this time, I developed a strong passion to help students achieve success and reach their personal goals. As my passion for tutoring flourished, I began helping more students at the elementary level as a teacher aide in the classrooms and after-school offering 1 on 1 & small group tutoring.
After graduating from Texas State University with a degree in Accounting, I began working full time. From there, I started tutoring & mentoring co-worker’s students for fun. I also got the opportunity to teach evening business courses to students at a trade school (Southern Careers Institute). This was challenging being one of the youngest teachers ever at the age of 23 but it sharpened my skills to lead, instruct and develop my character to prepare for my next journey.
Throughout this time period, I began to witness some of the challenges students face in order to be successful, such as poor study skills, different types of learning styles, lack of self-esteem, and diverse backgrounds.
Once I understood the intangibles behind cultivating a productive learning environment the idea of creating a tutoring company began. I started Planting Seeds Tutoring & Test Prep with the vision of nourishing & growing the seeds of knowledge, self-confidence & character within students. Our slogan says it all “Passionate Learning Is The Seed To Growth”, want to instill these values and morals in every student we reach.
Currently, Planting Seeds Tutoring & Test Prep is serving the metropolitan cities of Houston, Dallas, Austin & San Antonio. We also help students in other various cities & countries. We have helped over 300+ students achieve academic excellence.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have definitely had my fair share of challenges thus far & still am dealing with challenges every day.
The first challenge we see in the immediate future is our growth in size. We have grown exponentially within the past year. In order to keep up with the demand, we need to make sure we have a solid infrastructure that can keep up with the fast-paced environment by adding additional tutoring software, hiring staff, etc.
Second, how could I keep students/parents coming back for our services? As we are growing in size, we continue to add to our curriculum so that students have fresh lesson plans and we build content that is more personalized for every student.
Third obstacle, I endured was finding the right employee that would fit my business and represent my vision. I remember one of the first clients I had I assigned them to one of my new tutors. At the first tutoring session, he was a no show, no call. I lost that client and realized the importance of hiring the right employee that would represent the passion, drive and excellence that Planting Seeds Tutoring represents.
The last obstacle going into the summer is determining which marketing efforts will bring the best results for our company. As a small company, we are very conscious of where our dollars are spent and analyzing the results of these efforts. In order to grow, you must be willing to spend money but it needs to be strategically.
