Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A palpable sense of disrespect, fear, and frustration persists as women continue to grapple with wage disparity, sexism, upward mobility, and sexual harassment. Some women feel left out, left behind and, at times, voiceless.

Being both a minority and a woman is a double impediment.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The Houston chapter of the Commercial Real Estate for Women (CREW) network brought its “CREW Careers: Building Opportunities” to Barbara Jordan High School for the second time in many years on Feb. 8. This hands-on “Real Estate 101” program gives girls a chance to meet and network with more professional women whose jobs directly relate to some aspect of commercial real estate transactions (i.e., brokers, architects, surveyors, etc.).

About 100 students also worked in teams to disaggregate information from demographic maps, topographic maps, industry standards, and other materials to create a development plan for submission to a juried competition. “The people who are involved in this event are professional women doing everything you can imagine in what has traditionally been a men’s field,” said Jordan HS marketing instructor Madeline Hartwell. “They tell our girls how they got where they are, and a lot of these women also partner with us to offer internships to our students. So it’s a great opportunity.”

Hartwell said she was particularly excited to have a Jordan alumna serving as a local industry expert this year. Denise Ozene owns her own brokerage firm, Ozene Realty Consultants. “This event really gives these girls exposure that they might not normally have in a classroom setting,” added KHOU-Channel 11 News reporter Katherine Whaley, who served as a judge for the second year in a row. “And what impresses me is how quickly these girls are able to start using pretty advanced industry terms—some of which are even new to me—and how eager they are to learn it.”
