Today we’d like to introduce you to Adri Garza.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love of writing started at a young age. Crafting stories came naturally, but writing about myself was more of a struggle. That is why when I attempted to create my first blog back in college, I abandoned it before even drafting one blog post. Many years later, upon returning to work after giving birth to my daughter I tried again. Babe in the Burbs was created as an outlet for myself and a way to connect with others through motherhood and any other passions I wanted to share. Those passions include style, travel, and everyday life in addition to motherhood. I am so glad I gave my passion for writing another go through blogging. It has brought me so much joy and an opportunity to connect with so many other women.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a first-time mom comes with a set of challenges in itself, but adding in a new venture will bring more. I struggled with consistency and time management a lot in the beginning. I find now that if I do not map out my content and set my own timelines I will fall victim to those challenges again. Being a mom is my first priority and that makes it easy to discount my other passions, but making time for them is important. I would highly recommend mapping out your month to anyone interested in writing or blogging. Additionally, my biggest advice is to just start! It is easy to feel like “everyone is doing it” or come up with why you shouldn’t, but no one is you and your voice matters.
What else should our readers know?
My blogging content is primarily centered on my motherhood journey. I am happy to share and document this part of my life with others, but lately what has made me most proud is sharing the journeys of others. Last month, I launched a new series to the blog titled “The Journey to Motherhood Series” and it is a set of interviews with women in different stages of motherhood. It focuses on a woman’s struggle to conceive and how everyone’s journey to motherhood is unique. Through sharing these women’s stories I have been able to connect to others who have dealt with similar scenarios. It makes me proud to know that I am providing my reader’s with insights and experiences other than my own.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Getting out of my comfort zone and sending a direct message to other women or attending events alone has been so helpful in my experience. It has allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life and create partnerships and friendships. I feel like I have strong women around me. These women include those a part of The Houston Latina Bloggers, a community I joined after the founder, Connie Leon reached out to me. Groups such as HLB are huge networking pools and a source of support. I highly recommend anyone who wants to move forward in their passion to put themselves out there and connect.
