Meet Ty Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Lewis.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am not sure if I have a unique story. I am a southern girl who loves to let her body roam free to eclectic beats found in soul and alternative to gospel and jazz. I am fascinated in creating experiences through movement and performance. I am inspired by sounds that flow through my ears and makes its way to my soul. “If you don’t stop dancing in this store Ty’esha!” Is what my mom would tell me every time we went to the grocery store. I would often run into everything and everyone while trying to squeeze in a groove. But for some reason, I just couldn’t stop. I didn’t want to stop. Even today, I can still find myself dancing everywhere I go while walking, teaching, praying, biking. If there are sounds, experiences, and/or spaces that my body can’t help but to move in, it will.

Please tell us about your art.
I LOVE to create performance art! I have a natural talent for creating experiences through performance. When in my natural, freeing and creative habitat, I can get lost in producing spaces that come to life, by transforming my personal experiences in a creative way. “I wonder if I can purchase a huge bright green shaggy rug to cover the entire stage and recreate my grandmothers front yard?” It is the curiousness of my emotions, memories, and ideas that fuel my creative process.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The greatest challenge I am currently facing is turning my passion for performance into my financial security. I struggle with business. When to post or share things on social media? Should I create a website? How do I promote myself to get an audience? Even with answering the questions in this interview is taking longer than it should, because of the stress of what people will think about what I present. I do not enjoy the stress that comes along with the business side of what I do. It makes me over think everything and lose the fun and magic in creating.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
In a good year, I present and share work locally in Houston 5 to 6 times a year. On an off year where I am producing very little work about 2 to 3 times a year. I have produced work for myself, friends, colleges, and festivals locally and statewide. Most of my work is presented at MATCH, which is a performance theatre in downtown Houston, through performance opportunities presented by Dance Source Houston, which is an organization created to help support the dance community here in Houston.
