Today we’d like to introduce you to Kartez Rowel.
Kartez, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was younger, I had this CD player. I remember having all sorts of random disks with all types of music, but the first song I remember falling in love with was, “Pump It” by The Black Eyed Peas. There were so many different instruments and sounds that each playback gave me a different vibe depending on what sound I focused on. I think that song was the first instance when I realized that I loved music, and I wanted to create my own. Fast-forward to high school. I became amazed by the creativity of the different artist at the time and the way that they make their listeners feel. From Kendrick to Chief Keef, 2012-2015 gave me so many different sounds. I decided that once I got to college, I would definitely create my own music. I was young and knew nothing about making music other than trying to write, but I knew that just writing wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to fully create on my own sound, but I didn’t know how to play an instrument, I had no software, and really all I had was nothing but my brain and a pink laptop. Luckily for me, my really good friend introduced me to his dad, who had been making beats and selling them for the last 25 years. I told him how I wanted to make music, and he set me up with a software and over 20,000 sounds! The rest is history.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has NOT been a smooth road. First, while I’m in school, academics is the priority more than anything else. School is too expensive to get there and give anything other than your best, so that took up a lot of time and energy. Next, I’m a huge perfectionist when it comes to my music, and the learning curve for the software given to me wasn’t overly complex, but if I couldn’t get it to do what I wanted, I would spend hours, sometimes even days toying with it. Not only this but when you want to make your own sounds and sing on them too, you realize that having a laptop is not the only piece of equipment you need. So basically, when I first started making music, the first two years were spent gathering everything I needed, testing different equipment and styles of work, and trying to figure out who I was as an artist. Then, when I finally got comfortable with the software and I was making good practice habits of writing and recording with this little computer mike I had, disaster struck. Getting out of bed one day, I stepped on my laptop and completely broke it. I was heartbroken. So, of course, I had to wait to get a new laptop, and of course, the software on the old one wasn’t compatible with the new laptop, so I had to get a whole new system. Everything happens for a reason, though, because, with the new software, I got everything I needed to fully put songs together. The hardest part since then was learning how to work it all, and building enough confidence to put it out. There have been times where I felt discouraged, and I was afraid to be great, but through it all, I loved creating music, and that kept me going.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kingz Kourt – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Kingz Kourt primarily works as the record label I release my music under. We are also working to establish a clothing line under the same name. In the past, it was all about self-development, but now we want to focus on collaboration and outreach. I’m extremely proud of everything we do, and I try not to take things for granted, but if I had to pick one project I was most proud of, it would be the first project. “Escape From Gaia” was the end product of more than four years of work, and the beginning everything that comes after it.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, booking performances and building a team of creatives is what I’m most looking forward to. I am also looking forward to creating new music and merchandise. As far as major changes, we want to establish a website and continue to build the foundation needed to make a name and survive in this industry.
