Check out Kara Powell’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Powell.

Kara, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I come from a family of creatives. I consider myself the least of these. But I had to keep up somehow. Throughout middle school and high school, I loved dabbling in photography. And I even won a couple of awards for it. However, it wasn’t until my husband, and I got married that I really found my passion. He loved taking photos of buildings and landscapes. I gravitated towards random people. I loved telling their stories through emotion. So when our son was born after eight years of infertility treatments, that was all I needed to quit my corporate job and focus on him and my blooming business. Back in 2009, maternity and newborn photography wasn’t the staple that it is now. 85% of my clients come to me because they relate to my infertility journey. My business of in-home sessions and casual, lifestyle portraits was unique. I still continue to do this with families and newborns. I find that clients love the convenience. My business has continued to grow and thrive. I absolutely love getting to know my clients and spending time with them, in their homes is an honor. Most of my original clients are still with me, and I so love to see all of those sweet babies grow into tween and teens. Capturing memories is an honor that I do not take lightly. Ten years have flown by, and I am looking forward to the next ten.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Kara Powell Photography is an experience all it’s own. If you want something unique that shows off your family, you have come to the right place. Our studio is known for top-notch service, products, and images that stand out. Most of our family sessions include the family fur baby, which is fun and keeps things interesting. Each and every one of our sessions includes a product. Whether it is an album, canvas, or framed print, you will leave our studio with a beautiful piece of art for your home. Don’t let your family session sit in a drawer or on the computer, show them off to everyone!

The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Being an artist is a fun and wonderful path in life. But often it takes a while to get to where you would like to be. It won’t happen overnight. So my advice is to be patient and work really, really hard. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle or end. Also, find friends in the business. You will need them. It is good to have friends to talk to and bounce things off of. They are not competition.

If you have financial concerns, I would spend time on learning. YouTube and the Internet should be your best friend! And then practice on everything and anything. All of this is free to you.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Kara Powell Photography just hosted our 10th-anniversary party in the Woodlands. It was a gallery event that showcased ten years worth of photos.
