So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working for a carpet cleaning & water restoration company in Lubbock, Texas while attending school at Texas Tech University. Starting out, I had to find a job to help me survive the college life. I quickly realized I had a passion for cleaning and making a difference in people’s homes. I spent 8 years working for this company and even met my wife, Mary Jo, doing a job for her at her apartment! We moved from Lubbock in 2012, when I was offered a regional manager position for a janitorial service company based out of Houston. I spent 2 years with this company learning another side of the industry. All along, I knew I wanted to be my own boss and my wife was willing to join me on the journey! After a long, well thought out approach, we opened the doors to Steam Commander in June 2015, with primary focus in Houston, TX and specifically Cypress, TX. We also reside in Cypress and are proud to be locally owned and family operated!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part it has been a smooth road. Because I had so much experience in the field, there was not a learning curve for me. Mary Jo, was quick to jump in and learn everything she could in order to run the office, and we were able to hire a very eager technician, Vance McShan. When the Tax Day floods hit, we struggled with keeping up with all of the work and being such a small team. We worked hard every single day, 7 days a week, for about a month, and proved to ourselves we could do anything, as long as we worked hard. The Tax Day floods showed us no job is too big or too small, we are willing to try anything!

We have the best family and friends that have supported us and encouraged us from day 1. Without their support, we would not be where we are today. From helping watch our young boys so we could work late hours, to referring us to their family and friends, we know who we can count on when we need help. Knowing we have that support, drives us to put in the long hours and helps keep us going even on the hard days.
Also, without our technicians, we literally could not do what we do. Vance McShan (Crew Chief) and Derek Longoria (Technician) have been the most vital part to our growing business. Vance has been with us since day 1. He jumped right in and went to work and hasn’t stopped. He takes pride in his work and building lasting relationships with our customers. Derek has been with us for 9 months, he also works hard day in and day out. He enjoys seeing the immediate results in whatever he is cleaning, and in turn how happy his customers are. They represent our company well and we are so thankful for them.
