Meet Gabi De la Rosa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabi De la Rosa.

Gabi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My writing started out not as writing at all, but as a love for reading. It is quite rare to find a writer who isn’t also a voracious reader. I began writing stories as a young child and then transitioned into writing for the school newspaper, yearbook and that continued well into college. I minored in technical writing and that served me well in my career in Environmental Science.

When my children were young I took a break from full-time work and began blogging, which turned into an offer to write about a couple of Houston restaurants for a magazine. From my very first article, I was hooked – I loved every aspect of it and haven’t stopped writing since.

I cover travel, entertainment, food, and lifestyle – primarily in Houston, but US and Mexico, as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Freelance writers MUST have a thick skin. Some editors are dreamy and wonderful to work with, but others can be brutal. There is also a lot of rejection when pitching ideas to editors or publications and it is easy to get down on yourself for not always landing a pitch, but I have learned not to take it personally. I have also learned not to compare myself to others on Instagram – which as we all know, isn’t always reality.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from others is my authenticity. I try really hard to let my actual voice come across in my writing style. I also try and let my love for Houston and travel shine through my words.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started writing for publications A LOT earlier! I also wouldn’t have taken rejection so hard at the beginning of my writing career.
