Meet Kerry Gorelick of Kerry Lee Portraits in Montrose/Museum District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Gorelick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been photographing seriously for a little more than three years now. It started out of necessity really. I was building websites full time for a university and freelancing on the side as well. Oftentimes people didn’t have a great headshot or it was out of date. So one day I switched my oldish but serviceable DSL camera to manual mode and haven’t switched it back since! I absorbed everything I could that was available online to teach me how to use my camera and started photographing friends, then friends of friends.

I moved to Houston a year and half ago with my husband and three children, and we decided it was a great time to take my photography business full time. I spent time learning how to start a business and hone in what genre of photography I really wanted to shoot.

Earlier this year I did my first boudoir session, and I was hooked. It’s incredibly rewarding. Yes, I get to create beautiful images that clients will treasure for a lifetime. But more importantly this experience provides a space for each woman to be brilliant and gain confidence from the self-love that it requires.

Has it been a smooth road?
In general I’d say that my road has been smooth. I have an incredibly supportive husband and family. I am so thankful for them.

My biggest challenges have come from within. As a recovering perfectionist and over-analyzer, I often second guess myself and wonder whether something is ready to release out into the world. It’s something I’m actively working on.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a boudoir photographer. I take gorgeous portraits of women that just happen to be wearing very little clothing. The women I photograph are everyday women with careers, partners, children who want to document their beauty and sensuality for themselves and their partner. Many of the women I photograph are moms and, as a fellow mom of three, I can relate. Body parts move and shift. It’s totally natural. We work together to emphasize each woman’s favorite parts of herself and create images they love and feel proud of.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The business community in Houston has been so supportive. I love going out and networking with local business owners. I’ve made great contacts and friends along the way. Houston is an amazing city full of opportunities for anyone with an interest in starting a business.
