Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Serna.
Caroline, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, I always loved art and being creative. I ended up going to college and getting my degree in Interior Design. I worked for architecture firms as a commercial interior designer for over 20 years and was getting to the point in my career where I was at a crossroads and needed to make some decisions about my future. At the time, I had two young daughters who also loved art and being creative. Often times they were at home making things from boxes and scraps of paper instead of playing with toys that were purchased for them. I wanted to take them somewhere to foster that creativity and to allow their passion for art to grow. There was nowhere like that in near us, so I made the decision to leave my career and to create that place for them. In 2014, the idea for Creative Edge Art Studio was born. My business partner, Janet, and I wanted to create a place in Pearland that would allow children to express themselves and to be creative. We opened the studio in January of 2016. When we started we offered weekly art classes for kids, camps, and birthday parties. We’ve since expanded into adult workshops and other special events throughout the year. It is our goal is to cultivate creativity and to inspire every art student to explore, laugh, and learn.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening a business is never a smooth road. We’ve experienced a lot of bumps along the way! One of the biggest struggles for us, like most businesses, is capital. Our business fluctuates a lot with the time of year, and we never know what enrollment is going to be like from one session to the next, so maintaining a consistent and reliable income stream is tough.
There has also been a lot of growth in the area with more activities for kids to participate in, so competing with those other activities can be difficult. People don’t often understand the importance of art and how much it helps a child’s development and critical thinking.
Janet and I started everything from scratch for the business- so learning how to build and maintain a website, accounting, programs for the studio, teaching, marketing- we are wearing a lot of different hats and learning new things everyday!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Creative Edge Art Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
Creative Edge Art Studio is an art school for all ages. We’re most known for our Masters Series art classes for kids ages 2-14. Our multidisciplinary art classes are designed to help artists of all ages unleash their creativity and self-expression. Our curriculum is carefully tailored to match the unique developmental needs and/or skill level of every age group. From painting to collage, to sculpture and more, artists have fun while learning the fundamentals of art. All of our classes offer hands-on learning and full immersion into a new world of expression and mediums.
We have an amazing space that parents enjoy while waiting for their children in their classes and it’s the perfect space to host events and parties. We are a family at Creative Edge. Most of our teachers have been with us since we opened and we are all very invested in our students and the families that are with us. We love seeing the kids grow up and change. Some of our students started with us at 2 or 3 years old and they are now in kindergarten or first grade, so to see them go from not wanting to leave mommy or daddy to independent kids is very rewarding.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say luck has played a small role in my life and business. It’s been more hard work and determination that’s getting us through!
