Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitzi Perkins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mitzi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I quickly realized in college that I would not get my degree in dental hygiene as fast as what I wanted to when Katrina made landfall. The dental school was damaged heavily and a lot of things had to change that year, including my application being destroyed by the floodwaters. My husband and I then decided to marry, graduate and we would plan to move to Houston. He would work in the oilfield and I would go back to school and become a certified hygienist. That didn’t happen, we started out our married life with a surprise pregnancy, an economic crisis and downturn in the oilfield. I decided to stay home with our firstborn since my husband was working an offshore rotation, however, when our second son arrived shortly after our first, I needed to find something that would supplement our income while still allowing me to stay home with two little ones. I started my photography business in early 2010, I’ve always had a creative eye and loved capturing my clients growing families.
In 2016, after my fourth son was born, I made the decision to take a break from photography and devote my time to my family. As I was closing this door, I was approached with a job opportunity in a local boutique that would allow for me to work many angles of the retail world as well as having my little ones by my side. My younger two grew up in the store, the baby took some of his first steps in the space and I grew my knowledge of brands and styling. When the store closed earlier this year, I knew that I had to figure out what my next phase in life would be. I knew I loved fashion, shopping, cooking and home décor and I wanted to create something that would empower other women. In early 2019, Mitzi Perkins Lifestyle was launched and I haven’t looked back!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Teaching myself code to install my website on my own while juggling my home life. Making sacrifices and showing up to everything that I possibly can in order to get my name out there and still get my kids to practice and being their biggest cheerleader on and off of the field. Am I exhausted when it’s time to hit the pillow? Absolutely. Do I have to keep myself more organized and on a daily schedule? You bet! I stumbled upon an organization called the Houston Blogger Babes and it has been a wonderful tool. We empower each other, provide support and cheer each other on. I have learned more in this business while talking to these women over coffee than I have researching for hours on end.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Mitzi Perkins Lifestyle is a lifestyle blog that highlights the latest fashion trends, seasonal home décor, recipes, deal alerts, and motherhood. I am proud to be a mother of four in my thirties who embraces her body and shows others that you can still be stylish and a busy mom.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honestly, it’s being real. With social media today, it’s hard to get wrapped up in a certain unrealistic expectation. I want my readers and followers to look at one of my photos/posts and think “she is built similar to myself if she can wear it, so can I.” I want someone to read and follow along with my blog and be inspired to be their best self.
