Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobi Igbalajobi.
Tobi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved food since I was little. My friends and family used to joke about me having the appetite of a grown man! I love everything about food especially how diverse it can be. I am Nigerian, and Nigerians are big on cooking and extending hospitality, so naturally food has been a big part of my life. While I love Nigerian food, I definitely can appreciate a good meal from any culture. The fact that some of the same ingredients and food can be used completely different to make a dish from one culture to another fascinates me! I honestly started this page because I was tired of people asking me if I post anything else other than food on my personal page. So one day, I thought to myself, “why don’t I just start my own separate page dedicated to showcasing what I’m eating?” That’s how Eatzwithtobi started. Honestly, before I started the page I had no idea that there was a foodie community or even how big it was in Houston.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me, I started this page really just for fun a few months ago, and still view it as such. While I do take care in what I post and how I present it, this page is more of a hobby for me. Probably the only challenge I have, is balancing my involvement with the page with my actual life. It’s very easy to get consumed in likes and followers and miss out on investing time in more important things.
Please tell us about Eatzwithtobi.
Eatzwithtobi is a food-focused page I created on Instagram. I primarily showcase restaurants I love or have visited in the Houston area, but I do travel on occasion and like featuring food from my travels as well. I do like to splash in some foodie related quotes or thoughts in there, just to switch it up. I appreciate that people view this page as something they can refer to if they want to try out a new restaurant or switch up where they eat in the city. I have very supportive friends and family, and my favorite thing to hear is when they naturally say, “I’m always saving the places you feature” or even when they give me recommendations of places they love. I’m always down to try something new!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I personally don’t believe in luck at all. I feel that you should just be yourself and be natural. If people like what they see they’ll support it, if not that’s ok too.
