Meet Corey Ford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Ford.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I first got into hair by playing with the Barbie dolls with my sister. And that turned into me sneaking and styling my sister’s hair as I got older. After high school, I started working in construction and I was getting tired of working in the heat so I quit and enrolled into Franklin Beauty School in Houston, TX. While I was a student at Franklin, TV producers casted the owners of the school and myself for the show Houston Beauty on the OWN Network. Shortly after the show wrapped, I became a licensed hairstylist. Two years later, I opened my salon called Salon 1409 in downtown Houston on Caroline Street. I’ve been there for four years. We have stylist there who does hair, nails, makeup, and lashes all under one roof.

Has it been a smooth road?
Getting through beauty school was definitely one. I went to one other beauty school before I enrolled into Franklin and then I went back into the workforce and finally went back to school and then obtaining my license. And trying to figure out what career path I wanted to take would be the biggest another challenge I faced as well.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in all things extensions. I use different install methods from traditional sewins to K-tips to custom wigs on a sewing machine. I also was casted on American Beauty Star on Lifetime and I came in second place on that show and made it the season finale. That experience and exposure has brought me to meet different brands and become brand ambassadors for these companies. I’ve met some awesome people along the way.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I feel Houston is a great place for a salon and hairstylist. The city is constantly growing so it’s definitely room for more of us.
