Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaica Booker.
Jamaica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started ‘Perfectly Unique’ originally as a blog in August of 2009. At the time, I had a desire to become a writer for a women’s magazine. Much to my dismay having a degree in communications just didn’t equal that you automatically received a career in your field. After realizing that if I wasn’t going to get hired for the opportunity that I wanted then I might as well create my own. Which is how my blog “I Am Perfectly Unique,” was born.
Perfectly Unique was a creative way for me to express my ideas, views and opinions on different topics pertaining to women. The Perfectly Unique Blog set out to address all subjects ranging from dating, relationships, finances, careers, education as well as fashion. Perfectly Unique Boutique was created several years later in 2013. The goal of ‘I am Perfectly Unique’ is to reach all women of different walks of life and create a place for them to come together on common ground through shared life experience.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. When I initially started my T-Shirt business, I had just hit a rough patch in my life. I had recently just graduated from Grad School and as mentioned before, I had no prospective job offers and to be honest, I didn’t have a job either. Trying to keep up with creativity, smiling, and running a business all while staying with friends was no easy task. But I was determined to make this thing work. Thankfully within the first year, I was able to obtain a full-time career, but that also led to financially security and me shelving my online store for a while. It wasn’t until I recently decided to give up the so-called security to chase my dreams that I focused back on my business. I created new designs, a new website, reached a new audience and a newfound sense of freedom to explore and live out my passion of pushing out the agenda of women empowerment.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Perfectly Unique Boutique – what should we know?
Perfectly Unique Boutique is fashionably expressive apparel that empowers women to unite, yet still showcase their own individual “Perfectly Unique” personalities. My statement apparel is solely focused on empowering women and encouraging them to embrace their unique personality and their choices throughout life. I have shirts that are made for the women hustlers all the way to those who consider themselves culturally confident. My hope is for when someone wears one of my designs they embody and manifest exactly what it says. What I am most proud of about my business is that each design is specially curated and designed by me, I don’t create or sell anything that I wouldn’t wear myself.

I am grateful to have some awesome individuals in my corner. My parents have always been huge advocates of any of the endeavors I want to pursue. In addition, I have a handful of friends that are extremely supportive in the aspect of purchasing my apparel and getting others to as well. In the moments that I get down on myself for feeling like I am not going as hard as I should my boyfriend certainly is always there to remind me that I am doing an amazing job and to never give up.
