Today we’d like to introduce you to Albert Okagbue.
Albert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out doing audit work at Deloitte, one of the largest global accounting firms. I had a good experience there and it kindled my passion for the accounting profession. While at Deloitte, I discovered that I really wanted to work with small businesses and help individuals on their journeys to achieve financial wealth. This is what led me to leave the firm and set up my practice.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge has been people expecting to deal with a much older professional. In some cases, I have lost business due to people feeling more comfortable with someone older who may or may not understand their business better. That said, most of my clients are affluent millennials and Gen X individuals and I enjoy working with them.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What should we know?
I provide tax preparation, tax planning, and advisory services. I help people file taxes. I help people understand what taxes they pay so they can reduce it over time. And I also help people understand business opportunities and transactions that they are considering getting involved in. Many of my clients are real estate investors and benefit from my broad understanding of business (not just tax) to help them get the most money out of their investments. What I’m most proud of is helping people make decisions that alter the course of their financial lives. I’m not just a tax professional, I’m someone who is well-versed in how businesses and investments work and that is what I bring to my clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I focus relentlessly on what I’m trying to do and who I’m trying to do it for. It allows me to not only do what I do well, but understand the particular needs that really make it valuable for the person who will benefit from it.
