Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kate Walker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Walker. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a marriage counselor and counselor educator. I started All About the Family in downtown Conroe above what is now the Corner Pub in 2004. My husband was getting mobilized to Iraq and I was starting a Ph.D. program at SHSU, but we both thought, what the heck? Let’s give it a shot. I made it work until spring of 2005 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. By 2007 I had finished my degree and my last reconstruction surgery so my mentor Dr. Judy DeTrude and I opened achievebalance.org in Market Street in The Woodlands and we have been here ever since. Our counselors provide marriage and family counseling, adult individual counseling, adolescent counseling, and counseling for kids.
Achievebalance is only one part of All About the Family LLC. After my mother Ann McLellan passed away from Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) in 2009 I opened a non-profit counseling clinic and called it Ann’s Place. Ann’s Place, located on Pitkin Road in Spring, Texas, provides affordable counseling to the community and counselor supervision to local counseling interns.
Since opening achievebalance.org in Market Street in 2007, Judy and I trained hundreds of counselors and counselor interns through achievebalance.org. When Judy retired in 2015 I started the third arm of All About the Family: Kate Walker Training.
Kate Walker Training is now in its second year and offers online counselor continuing education, classroom courses such as the forty-hour counselor supervision training, and counselor practice mentoring.
Has it been a smooth road?
My challenges:
– 2004 and 2005 having three kids under the age of 12, starting a business, starting a Ph.D. program, husband mobilized with the army and I was diagnosed with breast cancer
– Finishing a Ph.D. in 2007
– The death of my mother in 2009
– The recession in 2010
– The death of my father in 2015
So, as you know, we’re impressed with All About the Family – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Ann’s Place and Achievebalance.org provide counseling to north Houston area. Kate Walker Training provides counseling continuing education to counselors in Texas.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston’s diversity, its wonderful music scene, and the food! I hate what everyone else hates about Houston – the traffic.
