Meet Ciaran “Mr. C” Simon of Westchase Tavern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciaran “Mr. C” Simon.

Ciaran, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in the hospitality business in 1980 at Houston’s Restaurant. After six years there, I helped open Big John’s Neighborhood Bar on Wilcrest. Seven years later, I went to work at the Westcrest Pub on Westheimer. I became an owner in 1999 by opening Mr. C’s Irish Pub. Westchase Tavern was my third location, opening in February 2003 as Fedora Lounge. The smoking ban prompted a concept reboot and a name change. All told I’ve had six locations. Currently number 3 and number 6 are open. (Mr. C’s Irish Pub at 1570 S. Dairy Ashford is the other one) Had some bad luck with leases, etc on the other four. Kept having to develop replacement locations. Still surviving!

Has it been a smooth road?
As a “Mom and Pop” style company, financing and cash flow are a daily challenge. We’ve survived break in attempts, floods, the smoking ban, hurricanes, etc

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Westchase Tavern story. Tell us more about the business.
Westchase Tavern is a true neighborhood bar. A “Cheers” type establishment with a high repeat clientele. We specialize in craft beer and quality cocktails. We are known for providing a clean, comfortable, safe environment in a friendly atmosphere. We’re known for prompt courteous service. I’m proudest of our local community involvement through various charitable events. Toy drive for HealthBridge Children’s Hospital. Soup Cookoff for the Houston Food Bank. Anniversary Crawfish Boil in support of the Houston Area Women’s Center. Ms150 Fundraiser.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As our industry becomes louder, brasher and more reliant on gimmicks, we aspire to stick to our business model without becoming stale.

Mr. C’s establishments are always a pleasure to stop by and meet a friend, catch up on some sports on TV, toss some darts, or just relax with a cold drink after a long day. The staff is always professional and friendly, and you easily meet new friends with the outgoing clientele that usually hangs out.

I agree with all previous comments. Buying space, tables, chairs, beer, wine, spirits and then selling them is easy to try; but cultivating an atmosphere that makes everyone feel like friends and family is a delicate balancing art that creates ‘repeat clientele’ out of anyone who visits. Both Westchase Tavern and Mr. C’s (Energy Corridor) do just that.
