Today we’d like to introduce you to Danae Brown-Rideout.
Danae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Jamaica and my very first time coming to America I came to Houston. Growing up in the rural areas of Portland, Jamaica I didn’t know much about fashion or makeup. Where I am from we take our clothes down to the river to wash, we boil water on the stove so that we’ll have warm water to bathe, we wash, cook and clean at a young age so no one was really worried about makeup or the latest fashion! We didn’t have the time for it.
When I came to America, I was fascinated by basically everything! I would see these beautiful women wearing makeup and lashes and I told myself I need to teach myself. So when I met my husband, I told him my dream of one day owning my own lash company, and at the time we were really short on finances, especially after the birth of our son. But my passion for one day owning my lash company never died and after a year, I took the leap and did as much research as I could and built my very own website, created my business cards and launched my store online, all over social media. I got to tell you the love and support I’ve received from my customers is so amazing! I know that in the future, I would love to open a store that provides quality lashes and other beautiful cosmetics to my beautiful people out there!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! I was battling with the thoughts of rejection of people from all over who probably wouldn’t like my product and I would continuously talk myself out of my business ideas because I just wasn’t seeing the sales! I wasn’t making any profit and I broke down one day and my husband comforted me and told me that it’s never going to be easy but it will be worth the fight. So if I continue to fight for this business, I will be proud of myself and my family will be proud of me for trying.

Coco’s Mink Lashes provides quality, handmade and reusable mink lashes. We are known for our 3D mink strip lashes. I am most proud of the quality of my lashes and I also think that sets us apart from all the others, especially the Coco’s Mink Lashes packaging! Very original! You never have to throw it out, you can store your lashes in the packaging without having it look tacky!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston! Houston is so diverse! Ever since I came to America, Houston has been my home. There are people from all walks of life living in Houston! It’s like you never have to go anywhere else to experience all the different cultures. The only thing I would say I disliked was the traffic! Houston is so amazing people from all over are moving here.
