Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Kennedy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story stretches back to my mid adolescent years (9-10 years old.) My mother Vanessa Kennedy was a Drama teacher and raised me and my younger brother Marquette and I in the church. In church each quarter we’d have youth days in which we’d have to memorize 14-15 page sermons to preach in front of the church so where some kids may have developed stage fright from facing this at a young age, the confidence that those around us gave us with just their positive presence while we preached, heightened my level of confidence and sparked my love for performing arts. DLG Entertainment started about two years ago when my brother and entrepreneur Marquette Kennedy, my close friend and music producer for many acclaimed artists including NBA Youngboy and Jaydayoungan amongst several others, Tavian Carter, and myself decided to use all of our various talents to create a platform to create major events, bringing our entire city together and helping to pave the way in educating and leading by example for individuals of younger generations who look up to us in our own respective talents, as well as how successful we have become in such a short time due to much determination, integrity, and selflessness. And that brings us to 2019 where we continue to do all that we can to inspire and spread positivity.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like any worthwhile dream in any of our lives, the road has certainly not been smooth. It’s taken a good amount of trial and error for us to get the ball rolling the way we’d originally planned. Although we’re far away from where we envision ourselves being in the future, we continue to expand our knowledge on as much as we can, and no matter what, keep it moving forward. Life is a marathon, not a sprint, and that’s what keeps us from comparing ourselves with the “competition.” When your mind drifts off and starts comparing your journey to someone else’s, you’re unintentionally losing focus of your own map therefore remaining stagnant and that constant progression is key to becoming successful.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DLG Entertainment (Dream Live Give) – what should we know?
DLG Entertainment’s specialty really isn’t singular. We strive to entertain in the forms of event hosting, music production, film production, and as of October 2019, we’ve launched our clothing line. The most unique aspect of our brand is that it was built from the ground up 100% independently by three very driven college kids who refuse to accept failure. Being the youngest guys doing the things that we do in a city that is often disregarded in terms of entertainment, has certainly inspired many other young entrepreneurs to grind for their passions, and ultimately, that’s what it’s all about. Unity. When everyone is working together selflessly, you’re able to collectively shine, and eventually that light will beam bright enough to open the eyes of everyone outside, showing them how prolific we truly are.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston’s entertainment culture is extremely rich and it’s one of the biggest reasons of why it’s such a popular city, not only in Texas but internationally. It’s iconic from being the home of “The Beard” to being the Mecca for prime southern hip hop culture, the city of Houston is extremely euphoric.
I’d definitely say it’s a great place to start out in! You kind of get that feeling of an L.A. or an ATL. The city of Houston is crawling with superstars and if you’re looking to expand your brand, the connections are waiting for you to make them!
