Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Blanco.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started as a little boy…….. kidding. I actually got into Insurance and Tax preparations back in 2014 when I decided that it was time for a change in careers to better myself, to invest in myself and to put my daughters and step-children in a better situation. Before insurance, I was in the nightlife industry here in Houston for about ten years and as you can imagine that life takes a toll on your mental and physical health and it’s just not the ideal situation you want to be in when you have four little human beings counting on you; at least for me it wasn’t. I began my journey working in this industry after begging a friend of mine for about two years to ask his Dad to allow me to work at his Insurance and Tax agency with absolutely no experience and the only pitch I had at the time was “I’m not going to disappoint you and I promise to increase your revenue and not eat off your regulars” I figured at the time is was my best shot to having him approve my employment there and it worked.
I started in 2014, first year I learned what I had to learn and then was promoted to manage his Insurance agency after about a year and half of working there. I would work seven days a week and about 9-10 hours daily, never asking for a raise or overtime pay, I just figured if I was going to make the best out of the opportunity I needed to take advantage and learn everything, hustle up and make some money. Fast forward to 2016 when I finally made the jump to open up my own Allstate agency, I wouldn’t say I was 100% ready nor near it but I didn’t want to let the opportunity slip away; so I jumped. My agency opened up March 2017 and now going on three years, the ride has been everything but easy but its been all worth it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I really don’t think there is a such thing as a smooth road when you’re opening up your own business and knowing that you will have to hire employees and carry the responsibility of that overheard but regardless of the road as long as you have a clear vision of where you are going and stay resilient you will achieve it and exceed your expectations. There has been plenty of times that I don’t pay myself because my staff and business need to come first, but that’s just the nature of the beast. I wouldn’t change it or have it any other way. Till the wheels fall off.
Allstate Insurance – The Greater Texas Agency – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
So we are an Insurance company that deals with everything from Property insurance to Life insurance to Retirement investments. A lot of people don’t know that Allstate offers great Life products and Retirement investment products. I think the biggest thing I am proud of is never buying a lead or lead sheet from companies, we pride ourselves on our organic market and having our clients send us referrals based on the way we take care of them. I make it extremely easy (sometimes too easy LOL) to have access to me as the agent and sometimes it is a bit overwhelming with the amount of clients we have but I think that’s one of the things that sets me apart. It’s not really a good thing cause that’s what we have staff for but I like to interact with my clients and let them know that they aren’t just another sale but a part of the agency and their well being is our number one concern.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Not closing. Hahaha! We have won some awards and have hit our monthly goals since we opened the agency but to be honest a big accomplishment for me is keeping my doors open and being able to employ people and offer an opportunity like the one that was offered to me years back.
