Jacqueline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Crowns is an art-inspired collection of handmade and curated jewelry. We started in 2018 and currently employ local artists to help fulfill, create, and curate our collection. I work in the role of Creative Director, keeping on top of trends in fashion and art to offer the coolest pieces to our audience at an affordable price.
We believe strongly in supporting artists and the community; 10% of all of our sales go towards funding public art in underserved areas. We are small-batch but mighty; and we believe in supporting the community and its local artists one piece of jewelry at a time!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Starting a jewelry line is hard. You have to keep up with changing trends in accessories, fashion, and art; and maintain sales to keep offering new styles to your audience. We constantly utilize social media to let our audience know what is new, and what markets we will be at locally to keep our visibility consistent and up to date. Through the generous support of the Houston Arts Alliance and the City of Houston, the crowns was awarded an individual artist grant for 2019, so this has definitely helped us grow by giving us a leg up through seed funding. So that has been a huge help!
The Crowns – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in creating and curating affordable, on-trend jewelry with a positive and community inspired attitude. We pride ourselves on involving local artisans in the process and giving back through beautification in the form of public art. Our target audience is millennials age 18-24 and young adults age 25-40. We like to think we create jewelry that helps people express who they are through their personal style. Our pieces can be worn and layered in many different ways!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Definitely receiving the grant from the Houston Arts Alliance and the City of Houston this past January. It feels so good to have your city support the work that you do. Up until then, I had been self investing in this concept to build its potential. Having that endorsement after all of that time, labor and risk feel very rewarding.
