Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Mayo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Morgan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I found myself at the end of my 20s unhappy, overweight and completely lost. Tipping the scale at 224lbs on my 5’6″ frame was alarming and the day that I would no longer accept that as my reality came after the end of my first marriage. I was the typical Mom, kids first, me last. Unfortunately, when I made that choice it ended up with my physical and mental health taking the hit. I began my health and fitness journey October 2016, I had reached the point where quitting when things got tough was no longer an option. I knew the healthy girl was somewhere, deep inside me, just itching to escape. I joined a gym and surrounded myself with like-minded people, I cleaned up my diet and resolved myself to reach my goals on a specified timeline.
Fast forward to June 2017, I had pushed my weight down to 175lbs and felt better than ever mentally and physically. I met the love of my life and we married the following month. October 2018, I was told about a documentary looking for people wanting to compete in the bodybuilding industry, I was hesitant, but I applied, interviewed and landed one of two spots for this amazing opportunity. Dr. Rolando Morales headed the documentary and we started preparation for my first bodybuilding show in June 2019. Months of consistent, deliberately guided choices went into the daily work to sculpt my body in the short amount of time. As I graced the stage for the first time, sitting at 134lbs, I was astounded at what I was able to accomplish by pushing past my insecurities, my comfort zone and everyone that said I couldn’t.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was a tumultuous road filled with twists, turns and obstacles I never imagined. Being a Mom, wife, business owner, and every other hat you could possibly imagine, I know the struggles of daily life for women. When you face a weight loss and health journey you become bombarded with people trying to sell you lotions, potions and magic pills, but all in all you have to just put in the work. I was continually obsessed with the scale, not fully accepting that the body composition change underway was more meaningful than my gravitational pull. For anyone just starting, I suggest you first find your WHY. What piece of your life is this so greatly affected by that you cannot accept defeat? Is it your mental health? Physical health? Is it a goal of yours that you never imagined you would achieve? Find it, write out a timeline with realistic goals, followed by the steps to reach it. Small goals are just as important as the end goal.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m known for empowering other women to start and stay on their own health and wellness journey, to become their best self with the right knowledge of food and fitness. I’m most proud of the messages I receive from other women (and men) who, because of my own story, have started their own steps to health. What sets me apart…I’m a storyteller, an open book, I never mind sharing the struggles and finding creative ways to conquer them.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I meet so many women, each of them inspire me in their own ways. Everyone has a story to tell that in some way someone else has a connection to.
