Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Sowyrda.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for wellness started at a very young age and continued to grow as the years passed on. It wasn’t until my 30’s whenever my health took a pivotal turn and my search for a healthier lifestyle truly began. Exercising and eating clean became a daily part of my life, as well as reading various books on topics like nutrition, wellness and movement. After having my first baby in 2013, I was introduced to Pilates by a dear friend and fellow new-mama and the passion sparked upon my first reformer session. To say I was hooked is an understatement. I fell in love with this mindful movement in ways that ignited my desire to further my knowledge and deepen my understanding of how and why it made my body feel so good. I continued to practice and learn the Pilates method during my next two pregnancies and births, which helped my body stay strong through the postnatal recovery. After my third baby was born, I felt this strong desire to help others heal through mindful movement just as it was helping me heal. That passion triggered opening my home studio in 2016 and taking on private sessions until I no longer felt that was enough. God was calling me to really impact our community by opening a studio in our city whenever our community was hit the hardest with Hurricane Harvey.
To me, Pilates had not only been my primary form of exercise, but it had been my therapy, my favorite form of self-care in the midst of motherhood. Our community needed more forms of self-care and therapy during our darkest hours of rebuilding homes and lives. So my husband and I started searching for possible locations to open a studio while we were rebuilding our home post flood and raising three small children, because why not? I laugh, looking back on how crazy it must have all seemed, but things were falling into place in ways I can only sum up to being sent directly from heaven. In 2018, we purchased our studio location and began the renovations to turn something that was damaged in flood to something truly beautiful to help bring together our community.
Our mission at Vessel Pilates is to build a supportive space for our community to feel welcomed, to slow down, and to feel more present in their bodies. We believe in the power of self-care and set out to help our community achieve physical, mental and emotional balance through movement, nutrition, and overall wellness. Each day we see clients walking in our doors and leave with smiles on their faces lets us know we are succeeding in our mission with truly helping others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe there never is a completely smooth road to making your dreams become a reality, but we have been very fortunate with the speed bumps we have hit along our way. I think the ones that come to mind the most are small in comparison to what could have gone wrong. Your typical pipe leaks and hiccups during construction, but outside of that, just learning the ropes of owning your own studio and the duties that come with it. Personally, my biggest struggle has been finding enough hours in the day to teach, work on the business, parent three small children, tend to our household, and still have time for my husband, myself, our social life, and sleep! It has been a journey that, regardless of the late nights and countless to-dos, the impact we are having on the amazing people we have coming into the studio makes it all so worth it.
Please tell us about your business.
I am the proud owner of Vessel Pilates, a Pilates Studio and wellness boutique located in Kingwood, TX. We offer Pilates group classes and individual sessions, as well as other forms of movement like Barre, Yoga, Suspension, Rebounding, and Release work. We specialize in small group classes where we can tailor to each client in a more semi-private setting. We also offer a Kid’s Club for those moms who need more self-care without the hassle of having to find a babysitter. Our boutique downstairs holds apparel from various brands like Lululemon, Varley, and Free People Movement, as well as non-toxic skincare and wellness products.
What makes me proud of our studio is the way we are bringing people together, helping them get some much needed self-care time in, and educating them on better health and wellness, they can implement into their own daily lives—seeing the impact we are making by just sharing our passions for mindful movement has been the biggest reward.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At this point, I am just looking forward to continuing to share and build a community within Vessel. I’m excited about implementing community classes, various business collaborations, and community outreach events to further bring our community together through mindful movement and sharing what Pilates has to offer everyone.
