Today we’d like to introduce you to Irvin Retiz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Irvin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in the electrical business. My father owns his company back home in the Deep South part of Texas. He began taking me to work since I was ten years old and began teaching me how to work and the business side of it. During my sophomore, junior, and senior years in high school I began studying outside of school to take the electrical state exams to become officially licensed. I eventually passed and earned my journeyman license and also eventually earned my master electrician and electrical contractor licenses in 2017 when I was 23 years old. Around mid-June of 2018, I moved to Houston and started working on my own and growing the company from scratch. Almost two years later, I’m still trying to grow the company and have two employees (not including myself) and a new work van I purchased in November 2019. We will keep working hard for the rest of 2020 to achieve all the goals we set. When I come across obstacles daily, I implemented the strategies my father taught me on the job site and behind the desk, as well as what I’ve learned since beginning my journey as a business owner. I give all the credit to my father; without him, I definitely wouldn’t be here owning an electrical contracting company.
Has it been a smooth road?
There’s always obstacles and challenges on the road. Owning a business is never smooth. Some struggles I have faced in the past are sometimes not having enough money to pay off debt from materials/tools I’ve purchased but still managing to get more jobs to pay it off eventually. Another struggle was sometimes not having enough work that I would have a whole week off. The behind the desk part of the business is also challenging, especially handling the numbers if you’re not a math person. But these are all stuff you need to get through to reach the level you’re trying to get to.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are an electrical contracting business. Our specialty so far has been recessed lighting installations. But we have also done a few residential remodeling projects, residential new construction, commercial work, troubleshooting, and pretty much anything electrical. I think we’re most knows for our recessed lighting since it gives homes a more modern and attractive look. Most people are interested in recessed downlighting. I’m most proud of helping people with their problems. It gives me joy when we leave customers home, and they are happy that we took care of their problem, whether it’s adding light to the sides of their home or fixing an issue that could’ve been a fire hazard. We take pride in our work, and we don’t cut corners. We try to provide the best quality service we can and try to improve that daily.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a really good city for an electrical contracting business. As the 4th largest city in the USA, it’s definitely a good place to start. There’s more work here than all the electricians can handle. The good thing about owning an electrical business is that this industry won’t ever die out since there is always a demand for it.
