Meet Chioma Amala of Braids By Chi in Sugar Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chioma Amala.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chioma. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey began at the age of 13, when I decided to embark on my natural hair journey. At the time, I would watch countless YouTube videos about natural hair and gradually I started learning various braiding techniques and how to achieve different protective hairstyles. I started practicing different braiding styles on my younger sister, and eventually when I was in high school I started charging for my braiding services. I didn’t get serious about my business till about 2 years ago when I decided to create an Instagram page to showcase my work. It was very challenging getting clientele during that time, my business wasn’t growing and honestly, I wanted to quit. Despite the self doubt, I continued working on my craft and perfecting my skills. I’m so glad I decided to stay true to myself and keep pushing because now my business is growing tremendously, and I’m so grateful!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve definitely faced a few obstacles throughout my journey. When I started college as a full time student, I had a part time job, I was active in my ministry, and I was also braiding hair on the side. It was very overwhelming, and I had a tough time balancing everything. Eventually, all the stress weighed on my physical and mental health. I came to a realization that I had to choose between my part time job or my braiding business. I prayed about it, and I decided to leave my job of three years and pursue my craft. At the time, it wasn’t an easy decision, but I have absolutely no regrets. Ever since, my business has grown so much, and I’m very thankful for all the support and love I’ve received through this journey.

Tell us more about the business.
The name of my business is called “Braids By Chi”. I’m a self-taught hair braider, and I specialize in box braids. I’m known for creating neat and quality braiding styles for affordable prices. I’m very proud of the immense amount of support I’ve received ever since I decided to pursue my craft. What sets me apart from the rest would have to be my youth. I’m very young, I just turned 20, there’s so much space for growth and opportunities. The ability to build a business at such a young age is not only an advantage but a blessing.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck, but I definitely believe that everything that I’ve experienced has had an impact on my life and my business. Whether it was a good or bad experience, I’ve come to appreciate that every experience is a learning experience. I wouldn’t be where I am without the obstacles and barriers I’ve faced. And I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without the love and encouragement from family, friends, clients and even strangers.
