Today we’d like to introduce you to Frieda Aboul-Fotouh.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I started my psychiatry training I began to think about what it means to go see a psychiatrist – how hard it can be to reach out for help and how vulnerable it can make us feel. I saw this first as a medical student and resident at Baylor College of Medicine where I had the opportunity to train under very knowledgeable and compassionate psychiatrists in all different treatment sittings. Over the years of my training, and especially after I specialized in child psychiatry work at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital, I saw the impact it had on children and families to have an ongoing trusting relationship with a mental health provider.
Since graduating from training I have worked in different settings – outpatient, emergency health centers, hospitals – and I started thinking about having my own clinic where I could provide a warm and comforting environment for people to get the help they need.
And so, I opened Healthy Minds Psychiatry to be a safe place to go to with struggles – and a place that can provide help for all ages and all members of the family.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s always a challenge opening a small business. It’s a little of a leap of faith that you are starting something that will work. Thankfully word of mouth has helped grow Healthy Minds Psychiatry.
Healthy Minds Psychiatry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am trained to see children and adults for a wide range of mental health disorders. I have individuals who come for help with problems functioning at school, work, or home. Some describe anxiety, others moodiness, others feeling hopeless or helpless about their lives.
We are proud of the patient experience in our clinic. From the moment a patient calls in we go out of our way to make it smooth and easy. We have received a lot of feedback from patients about how much they have enjoyed coming in. I think this is reflected in the fact that I was named a top doctor in Child Psychiatry in the 2017 issue of Houstonia Magazine only six months after opening my business
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is enjoying your work while being able to give something to those around you. It’s simple for me and I am very thankful to have this in my life.
