Meet Jorge Diaz of JD Photography in Alvin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Diaz.

Jorge, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I actually never planned on being a photographer. My dad was a wedding photographer when I was little, but I never paid attention to it. I picked up a camera when I wanted to have more pictures of my three beautiful girls. My wife and I wanted to have more memories because they were growing up so fast, and I wanted to capture every moment. I haven’t put the camera down ever since. I thought that if I had that in mind, maybe other people and families thought the same. I know that there is a lot of competition in photography, but there is also plenty of work for everyone. Every photographer has his/her own style and I’ve been working on mine.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have gone through some challenges, maybe not as big as some people might think but big for me as a photographer. From the need of gear to a better lens for a specific shoot to flash and lights to use. There is always something new and better coming out and it is not cheap. It gets pretty pricey to be a photographer, and people don’t realize it. To provide quality photos, we as photographers, need quality gear.

Another obstacle for me is that I have a regular day job and a home to provide for. Not to mention, my family needs my attention. My girls want to play and have fun, that’s all they know at this age. So I make time to play with them. My photography time is nights and weekends, and my editing time is on late nights when everyone is fast asleep. With all that, I sometimes come to my biggest obstacle, me. I ask myself if I’m even that good to go through all this. Is it really worth it? I am my biggest critic. I try not to let it get to me, so I work hard to make every session better.

Tell us more about your work.
I love every aspect of photography. I think I am best known for or want to be known for is capturing a more natural look. I do have pictures of people posing, but that’s something people ask for sometimes. I do a lot of portraits, family sessions, concerts, events, weddings and beginning newborn sessions pretty soon. I’m trying to be diverse but ultimately, I want to be known for capturing moments in someone’s life. I also do photography for my church. I enjoy providing photos and video clips of services and events.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck. I believe that everything that I have accomplished and set out to do is all thanks to God. I don’t think its luck that I picked up a camera and learned how to use it or that I’m at the right place at the right time. I give God all the credit.
