Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Berger.
Erin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first got into health and fitness in high school. I was looking for a physical activity I could get into because I wasn’t involved in any sports. I struggled with yo-yo dieting and wanted to learn more about how to be healthy and reach my fitness goals without crazy diets. I started doing kickboxing and other group exercise classes and eventually got into weight lifting as well. When I got to college, I decided to study nutrition. I also became certified as a personal trainer and a group fitness instructor and began training people while still in college. I went on to graduate and complete more education in order to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Now, I own a private practice called The Houston Nutritionist. I help clients primarily with weight loss by providing nutrition counseling and customized workouts.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have definitely had some road bumps. I struggled with having confidence in my ability to start and run my own company. I told myself I’m too young, too inexperienced, someone else can do it better, etc. I finally forced myself to make the jump and just start. That’s my best advice, especially to other women, JUST START! Whether you’re trying to start a business, get a new job, go back to school, anything! Find a place to start and do it even when it’s scary. Other people may try to convince you otherwise. Leave them behind and prove to yourself how many amazing things you’re capable of.
What should we know about The Houston Nutritionist? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in helping clients with weight loss and generally getting in shape. I feel I’m different than other personal trainers because I am also a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist; RDN’s are the authority in the medical field when it comes to food and nutrition. I have the training to help clients in all walks of life achieve their goals. Sometimes clients are struggling with illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and other diseases that they need help managing. I can help them not only get in shape through working out but also manage their disease through proper food and nutrition. I never put my clients on restrictive unsustainable diets. My clients can achieve their goals while still enjoying all their favorite foods!
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I found my mentor through networking with other dietitians. I recommend joining Facebook groups and following people on Instagram who you see as a mentor. Social media is a very commonplace these days for marketing and meeting other people, so use it to your advantage.
