Today we’d like to introduce you to Elexis Mitchell.
Elexis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My roots are in Port Arthur, Texas where I was raised. I went through a program at Stilwell Technical Center where I received my Certified Nurse’s Aide license at the completion of high school, May 2006. I then attended Prairie View A&M University in the Fall of 2006 and completed my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing December 2010. I worked as a Registered Nurse for four years in intensive care and the perioperative setting before returning to Prairie View A & M University for my Master’s of Science in Nursing in 2014. My dream was to always become a Family Nurse Practitioner at a very young age. As a kid, if I could not play “doctor” or be the lead of whatever game that we played, I did not want to play lol. I have currently been practicing as a Nurse Practitioner for 2 1/2 years, with experience in Cardiology and Vascular Surgery – Podiatry.
In the midst of my medical career, I have always focused on the Mind, Body, and Soul functionality. When caring for my patients, I understand that my scope entails health promotion and disease prevention, therefore, I make sure that I incorporate those variables in treating my patients holistically. One of my goals as a healthcare provider is to ensure that my patients know alternative therapies to traditional medicine, hence, I recently birthed U.R.T.H (U R The Healer) in partnership with my sister, Ellicia Mitchell. We overstand that we have choices in what we digest into our bodies, consequently, we have to feed our beings with the right food, information, etc. We currently sale sage, crystals/stones, waistbeads, personalized paraphernalia, and more! U.R.T.H is a stepping stone to our final business venture, so stay tuned!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not! Life comes with roadblocks, detours, inclement weather, fear, timing, and many other concerns physically or mentally created. So far, my biggest challenge in life has been timing. I am a full-time Nurse Practitioner, therefore, most of my time is dedicated to patient care. When I lost my job for two months last year, timing was not a challenge, but fear was. I had to chose my battles, and that’s when I knew that I had to push forward with my business venture. I was uncomfortable knowing that my passion and retirement plan was only in my mind and had not been executed.
My advice for women who are just starting their journey is to be patient. Make sure that everything that you do has purpose, and that you are not doing “it” for someone else or a paycheck. When you allow those factors to drive you, it can become old and boring really fast. Explore if your dream/goal/purpose is influence or inspiration. The difference is that you have to decide if you’re doing it for others, or are you doing it because it drives you and you can’t deny it.
We’d love to hear more about U.R.T.H (U R The Healer).
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner with a medical background of 13 years and counting. My current specialty is Vascular Surgery – Podiatry. I am known for this background, however, family and friends know that I have always been a naturalista at heart; making sure to do everything as natural as possible. From my hair, to diet, to mindset, I believe in holistic health. As a brand, I am most proud of finally birthing U.R.T.H so that the world can start to heal and dig deeper outside of traditional medicine. As a service provider, I am most proud that I was able to stay focused and obtain so much at an early age, in such a chaotic world.
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t conform, I’m unapologetically me, and that I cannot be boxed in or pushed out. I am extremely nurturing and I truly want everyone around me to be happy, feel loved, and experience total peace.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I was raised by both of my parents, who married at 19 years old. I always had support and love from them and family members. They never pushed their views on me and always supported what I wanted to do. I was always headstrong and completed whatever I set out to do. I am forever grateful for their many sacrifices and unconditional love.
