Today we’d like to introduce you to John Oni.
John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My parents instilled in me at a young age the significance of working hard and going after your dreams. Unlike my parents, who migrated to the United States, I was originally born and raised here in Houston, Texas. Ever since I can remember, I have always been a very active and creative individual. Growing up, I participated in various extracurricular activities such as sports and visual arts. Now that I am older, the love and passion for these two avenues have driven me to pursue a career in both fields. Through fitness, I can coach individuals into reaching their goals by making life changing transformations that will ultimately lead to a healthier lifestyle. In addition, videography/photography allows me to tap into my creative elements to capture special moments for those individuals who would like to cherish a special memory or event. I take great pride, knowing that I get to utilize my skills daily by providing a service that directly positively impacts people’s lives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Though I have had some recent success with the services I provide, starting your own business is not easy and can come with many obstacles. Initially, getting the word out is the most important obstacle I faced. I might have the best services in the city of Houston but what good is it if nobody knows about them. I worked nonstop advertising myself and what I had to offer. I focused on trying to highlight what made my services better and more useful than all the other places a person could go to. I used various marketing tools such as word of mouth, social media, photography, videos, etc to get my brand out to the masses. It is important to note when starting a business, that initial success can take time. I had to realize to continue working hard and staying motivated in my craft despite the low or nonexistent inflow of consumers.
Please tell us about your work.
I Am fitness aims to provide personal training to those who needed assistance in reaching their fitness goals and lifestyle change. I Am Productions aims to provide creative visuals through photography and videography, showcasing people, special moments, events etc. I am most proud of being able to utilize my knowledge and skills of the fitness/health and creative arts industries by providing my community of Houston with high quality services. What sets me apart from other competitors in my field is that I am heavily invested in seeing my clients reach their fitness goals as well as enjoy the product that I produce visually. I am a hardworking individual who constantly looks for innovative ways to reach a designated outcome. Every client that I come into contact with has my full attention and receives the best I have to offer. Knowing that clients can utilize other sources for services, motivates me each day to do everything that I can to produce individuals with the desired outcome.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is when I won a bike raffle in Elementary School for having perfect attendance. Each year my school held a raffle at the end of the year between all the students who had perfect attendance that year. One male and one female student was picked from each grade level to receive a brand new bike. Every year, I hoped to be one of the students to get chosen. However, my name was never called. However, that all changed when they called my name at the end of my 5th Grade year. This was my last opportunity to receive this amazing gift before leaving Elementary School to attend Middle School. Moreover, what made this gift more special was that it was my very first bike that I owned. In addition, I learned how to ride a bicycle using it.
