Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Barbé.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been a creative person and I believe the best way for someone to express their creativity is the way they dress. If I could still get away with it, I’d probably put “voted best dressed in 7th grade” on my resume. I’m a lifelong style lover and always wanted it to be part of my life. I love fashion and clothing so much that I got a degree in it! I’ve worked in NYC’s fashion industry and since graduating college, I found my passion in retail management and store merchandising.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My expression is through the clothing I wear everyday. “Dress like you’re going somewhere better later.” If I like it, I wear it. As for others… When I talk to anyone about clothing, I always want them to know that as long as they feel comfortable and they’re happy, what else matters? I hate when people make comments about what others wear. No one should be able to tell you what you should and shouldn’t wear. Style is so relative and personal.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I’ve been there. Especially when it comes to fashion and always wanting to have the latest and greatest, trendy clothes, just don’t go into debt over it! I did and it wasn’t worth it. Invest in quality, capsule wardrobe style pieces once or twice a year and then budget yourself a small amount every month for the trendy stuff. I also do a lot of selling or even trading of stuff I won’t wear anymore and that helps put new (for me) stuff in my closet.
