Today we’d like to introduce you to Leonardo Mendoza Bernuy.
Leonardo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always enjoyed computers and technology since I was very young. I grew up in Latin America in a country called Peru. I took many different courses to learn technology, from Adobe Photoshop to 3DsMax. I started coding at the age of 12. I first started with animations and then went on to create video games in flash. When I was 16 years old, I started my first e-commerce business, however since I did not want to use a third-party e-commerce store because of the fees they charged, I decided to use my computer skills to create my personal website. I realized the business of websites was very interesting and many businesses were in need of one, so I decided to freelance as a web designer. After my portfolio started growing, I decided to apply and work for a digital advertising agency, I got the job and worked there for about a year. I tried to learn as much as I can, from the services they offered to how marketing worked in depth. In May of 2019, I decided to create ClientPie Marketing with my friend Julio Garcia. He had studied Marketing & Sales for many years as well and together we believed we could offer everything a business needs to grow and have a strong digital presence. We arranged a solid team of people (Abelardo Angulo as a Content Producer and Patricio Madero in Public Relations) that were experts in different areas of Marketing and decided to start our business. Since we opened, we have helped businesses all around the Houston area switch to the revolution of digital marketing for affordable prices and professional results.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a firm believer than anything in life requires you to give it all you have. ClientPie Marketing was nothing different. I took a semester off from college on January of 2019, so I decided I had to be spending my time doing what I loved and giving it all I got. We decided that if we were going to start ClientPie, we would have to take a leap of faith and dedicate all of our time to get clients and see it grow. Julio, Abe, and I would go to our local library every day from Monday to Friday and start making calls to many different businesses in all of the Houston Metropolitan Area. I remember that at first, it was a bit of a disappointment. We would get rejected so many times, and it felt bad. However, we did not give up and we kept calling businesses and promising we could give them top of the line Marketing Services, for a fraction of the price as the traditional marketing agencies charged and that they would see even better results. We received our first potential client in the second week of calling and it felt amazing. I realized that all I needed to do was tell the clients what I was capable of doing, the skill I had tried to perfect since I was nine years old and sell myself and my company. ClientPie Marketing continued to succeed until October of 2019. Julio had to move to Mexico to follow his dreams and study at a University to become an Engineer. I remember we had just closed a deal with a big Wholesale Rug Company the day before he left, Julio felt confident in letting me run the business and told me I had done an amazing job and would have what it takes to take care of our clients. It was hard at first to lose my business partner since he was such an expert in what he did, however, I believe as we grew together with our extraordinary team, I acquired the required skills to fill his place and continue. I believe there is never a day in when I stop learning as I manage ClientPie Marketing, technology improves and advertising changes every day so its either you give your clients the latest there is or someone will do a better job than you.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about ClientPie Marketing – what should we know?
The Internet came along with social media platforms, automatization tools and engines, and a plethora of confusing terms. Furthermore, the disadvantages of delegating this work to an inexperienced individual: will cost more in the long-run, deliver fewer, slower, and lesser-quality results, and worst-of-all – unexpectedly damage your brands’ reputation.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe perseverance is the most important quality in everything you do. I find it amazing what we as humans are capable of doing when we do not give up and we give it all we got. When I do something I like, I can work for many hours until I perfect it, I never leave something half done. I believe this is key to success.
