Abbie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Everyone has heard the old saying “Time flies when you’re having fun,” but I never expected the truth to be so literal. In the last ten years, I have worked in various positions where I reviewed several resumes. Throughout the recruitment process, I could see what interview committees and panels looked for in an applicant. I gained insight into what helped applicants stand out and leave an impression on the interviewers, as well as ways they should appropriately follow up after the interview to ensure they had the best chance of getting hired. These tips and practices are relevant to any field!
In 2013, while completing my bachelor’s degree, my personal and professional network expanded. Colleagues, friends, and family members often asked me to write and update their resumes and cover letters, help optimize their LinkedIn profiles, or compose mock interviews with them. As a college student, having an additional stream of income was a blessing, so I agreed. My passion blossomed when I saw the huge impact a career could have on a person’s livelihood. This was made evident when I helped a client—who worked as a cashier for six years—advance to a senior administrative associate position at a bank. His annual salary nearly doubled; he was able to apply for a loan to buy a home and move his kids to a better school district. One email with a specific subject line made his dreams a reality: “Need help with resume and a mock interview.” His life changed forever. This is when I decided to create Career Experts, Inc.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
So far, it’s been a smooth road.

Dream it. Plan it. Achieve it. After completing my MBA degree, I waited for the perfect moment to start Career Experts, Inc. Then, I realized there’s no such thing! In hindsight, I wish I had started sooner. I almost allowed my fears to get the best of me. Although I continued to supply my services to colleagues, friends, and family, I delayed opening Career Experts, Inc. for almost two years.
