Meet Warlene Rene

Today we’d like to introduce you to Warlene Rene.

Warlene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Warlene Rene and I design one of a kind unique draped piece. I also run a small business servicing bridal during the spring/summer. I am a single mother of four beautiful children ages 20,16,15, and ten. As a young girl I would frequently attend buying trips with my mother. She was a reseller of vintage clothing and antiques. She became self-employed when I was 11 and that always left a good impression on me and always inspired me. My father was a tailor and so those two were instrumental in my creativity and later ventures into fashion.

In 2010, I started working at a bridal salon where I stayed for ten years before I started my own local business. I stayed there five more years to perfect my couture sewing skills and master fitting and sewing special occasion. I also started up a little vintage shop and also selling some of my own unique pieces here and there.

Having my own business and creative outlet has been very important and special to me. It has allowed me to find a way to express myself and I’m always having to push my limits. I also continuously connect with many people I don’t think I would have otherwise if I weren’t in those fields. Not to mention other creatives in different fields you connect with.

Has it been a smooth road?
My struggles along the way actual have only been 1, staying motivated. Sometimes as a small business owner especially a one woman shows everything is on you. It’s not just about being creative and making nice things. There’s lots of operators involved, deadlines, and some of those late hours and so on. You will need to constantly remind or find reasons to keep going. Also find new ways to keep yourself intrigued. That can get tough.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am most proud of my bridal business, the fact that I am involved in one of the most important days in a person’s life is so special. I believe what makes me unique is that I offer custom services to my client. I’m not just offering an alteration service and making their gown perfect. I’m suggesting proper styling, a lot of the times I’m making their veils custom, and building better foundations inside of their gowns. The options to make a bride’s day even more special is so vast.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe so, I am actually looking to move into Houston permanently. I have quite a few family members there. I am originally from Florida and have been in Boston for a while but Texas has so much opportunity and I could do my wedding stuff year-round instead of seasonally.
