Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Shot First.
Cam, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About three years ago, I was given a Nikon D3400 as a Christmas gift and I haven’t really put down a camera since. Beforehand, I didn’t really have the confidence or the push to own my own camera and I just shot everything on my cell phone. I’m grateful for the people in my life who believe in me and push me outside of my comfort zone. I have them to thank for how far my work has come in the last few years.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have a full time career outside of photography so balancing my desire to create but also pay bills and put food on the table has been a struggle. If I am being honest, the pressure we get from society to turn your hobby into something lucrative has been the toughest aspect to navigate. I have to remind myself at times that my happiness comes from creating, not from the possibility of making a dollar from it. I feel like it keeps my work authentic, or at least I hope it does.
Please tell us about your business.
I do a lot of product photography for a printing business, I photograph events, and occasionally I take portraits. Recently, I got more involved in my digital art given our current climate and I have been taking on custom collage work. I think my digital art has come a long way since I started it a year ago and I’m really stoked for the future projects I get to work on with other people.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I hope to continue to create without fear of judgment from myself or others. I am working on channeling this energy into more community projects that hopefully will begin to come together by early next year.
