Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Shapiro.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 1936, my grandfather moved from New Orleans to Houston to open Duke of Hollywood Tailors. Passed down from generation to generation, my children are now the fourth.
With Old Market Square thriving, we began as one of eighteen tailors shop within a block of us coming from every direction. I continued to run my family’s business by following my grandfather’s “BIG 3” — Price, Quality, and Service. As the square became a revolving door of retailers, we were left standing alone as of 1980.
I continued the tailor shop for next 20 years, patiently waiting for the return of retail shops to Downtown Houston.
After careful observation, a new trend was noticed — flourishing bars and restaurants.
That is when I made the decision to throw CharBar into the scene and let the two businesses run side by side; Each business helping the success of the other.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
CharBar has withstood its ups and downs throughout the years. We have watched the downtown Houston bar scene rise and fall twice. With a rotating door of bars and restaurants, we have been able to survive with our heads held high. Within the past few years the downtown Houston has definitely been creating a Downtown lifestyle, which are bringing new people to Downtown Houston and creating a bright light on new and old bars, restaurants, and living spaces.
CharBar – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have been a family owned and operated business for 81 years.
We strive to make every customer feel like they are part of the family. CharBar is a relaxed environment where everyone is welcome. As a family owned business, we go above and beyond to accommodate our customers — our CharBar family.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
A singular 3,000 square foot buildings has been the life line for four generations of my family. Beginning with my grandfather, he passed it down to my father, and then to me.
This simple building has now financially supported three entire families. Now, comes the time for me to pass the business and the building onto my own children, for they are now building their own families to take off.
SUCCESS to me is being able to see what me and my family have created for my children and their growing families.
