Life and Work with Erica “EKay” King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica “EKay” King.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a single mother living in Houston, TX by way of Compton, CA. I moved here in Nov of 2009 in order to raise my daughter in a place I thought was a great place to raise children. I have spent the last 20+ years as a professional background vocalist working for variest artists around the world. But currently, I am a mother and a full-time student at University of Houston – Downtown where I am studying Business Management and Psychology. I am also a small business owner of “The TuElle Box” a company I started to raise funds for my daughters dancing. As well as a podcast host for Grinding Through and I am a Mary Kay consultant.

Has it been a smooth road?
No road is ever smooth; that purpose is behind. When you allow God to lead and guide you, there will definitely be some bumps in the road but the end result is what keeps you pushing and moving forward. I have always felt that my ministry involved young girls and young women. I would tell those who are in a place of unknown to just trust God and continue to lean on Him for direction. He gave us desires so that we would have something to work toward. So don’t give up, don’t throw in the towel and don’t let it go. Nothing worth fighting for ever came easy. Just remember you were made for this and with patience, understanding and trust in God you will accomplish your goals.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with EKay All Day, The TuElle Box, Grinding Through Podcast – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am known as Elle’s mommy! Lol……. Literally! I am also known as a professional BGV, a vocal coordinator and podcast host. I am most proud of my ability to adapt to my environment and to be able to evolve with the times. I think what sets me apart in everything that I do is my passion for people and the fact that I love what I put my hands to do. I can express myself and my heart in every aspect of who I am. In my profession as a singer in my business as a mom who makes crafts in order to support her daughter and as a podcast host who speaks in order to help people along the way.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Being taken seriously and getting support from those that are closet to you. I never realized how much energy I gave people. I learned that believing in myself and my craft, having a plan and trusting God is all I need to make it. Knowing that I am worth it made a huge difference. Self-worth is real and necessary to progress. If you don’t believe in you, who will?
